It' s almost like a cookie press if you've ever seen one of those...it's made for clay to extrude it into different shapes...flat, a long noodle....different thicknesses......people use it for fondant though, in order to make rope borders and things...you can find them in the clay (polymer clay) section in the craft store.

Here's what it looks like. It's hard to find the metal one, but I would recommend that over the plastic ones they now carry at Michaels. It's more sturdy.

I use it a lot too. If you check out the cakes in my photo gallery - the wedding cake with the rope garlands - the garlands were all done with a clay gun as well as the twisted rope on top. It's great because if you try to roll out ropes by hand - you don't always get the ropes perfectly even to twist. I finally figured out that the easiest way to use it is to warm the fonant up slighty in the microwave first - just a few seconds - otherwise it's really hard to push the fondant through! I have a metal one that I got at a cake decorating store made by a company called Kemper, I think.

If you get them in the clay section, are they food safe?

It's used for killing...clay people...shoots clay bullets...causes clay carnage. RIP Gumby.

Used with Fondant, mmf, etc. Handy for small projects.

Actually, I heard about the plastic green clay gun from Michael's but when I went there and looked in the clay section, I couldn't find it, and I asked a worker but she had no idea what I was talking about. The silver/metal one I got was actually from a cake decorating store, although it's not specifically for cake decorating - you can use it for other crafts - but I've never used it for anything but fondant or gumpaste, so I can't see any problems with it not being food safe.
