I just took a cake out of the oven and it smells kind of "eggy." I just bought these eggs yesterday at the supermarket and they're not expired or anything. It just doesn't smell right. Should I toss it or wait till it cools a little and take the crown off to see if it tastes funny? I am donating this cake so I don't want to get anyone to get sick or think that I make gross cakes!
I'm not sure. I have never come across this before. Are you making it from scratch or mix???
It's from a mix. I asked my husband to smell the cakes without telling him why because I wanted to see if I was the only one smelling it. He said, "smells fine." I tried a little piece and it tasted fine. When I first smelled it, it was as soon as it came out of the oven, and when it cooled it didn't smell like that anymore. Maybe I'm hypersenstive to smells today because of PMS or something crazy like that!
i've had a similar incident. The last time I made a fv cake, it had a wicked weird taste to me. I tried it hot.. but after it cooled it tasted fine and everyone else seemed to like it alot. Humph! I wonder what it is??? Maybe it is the pms thing??? lol
My cake is French vanilla, too! That's got to be it. It's the Betty Crocker one, which I love, but I'd never had the egg problem before. Glad to know it's something weird like that and not just me.
don't know about pms doing that, but when I get scent-sitive, it only means ONE thing - and it's DEFINITELY NOT PMS! (quite the opposite, in fact)
Not that it's any of my business.
glad it seems to have turned out allright in the end.
