Cake Disaster W/ Candy Melts Help

I made a crib cake (almost) for my daughter-in-laws shower. I used white choco. candy melts to pour a head and foot board for the crib and kneweled crib sides. The sides kept shattering each time I attached them. Any advice for the future?

I had the same problem with them on the "legs" of my big starfish that I just did for my wedding cake. All I can say is always make extras, but I don't know if there is a way to make them stronger so they don't break. "bump"

Sherik, how thick were your pieces? Thin pieces will definetly shatter.
Sometimes it will depend on the type of chocolate you are using.

With candy melts I have found you need to make your decorations with more depth for strength. I have also used cookie or popcicle sticks for interior supports on pieces I have done. They seem to work nicely and I have the added strength. For the side rails I would use the supports inside. This way you will have the weight of the hand railing laying on the hiden brace and not fully on the chocolate itself. Always make extra.

The cavas was approximately 1/4 inch. The frame itself was about 1/2 inch. My grandmother carried this thing around with her all day long taking it in and out of the box at least 5 times I know of and it never broke. There were no supports in this piece.

I'm not an expert but it might work for your next project. Maybe someone else has a better suggestion that can help. I know I would love to hear it too since I have some things in mind for my next moment of boredom.

I used the crib mold for my sister's cake. I had problems with the legs for the head and foot boards breaking off when I took the mold out of the fridge. I ended up making 2 sets of crib pieces and adding extra chocolate to the places where I anticipated cracks. If they still crack, keep some melted chocolate in a piping back and you can glue them back together.

Thank you Sherik, I think I misread your meaning of shattered pieces. I was thinking the side slats and not the pieces to the head board. Honestly I hope the hint might help somewhere in your future of chocolate. I read faster then I think sometimes. icon_lol.gif I connected the pieces together like Contessa suggested. Melted chocolate in a piping bag.
