I made this cake as a gift this weekend. Since I was "giving" it, I didn't have to even guess at a price. Now, someone has requested a price for one similar. Can you tell me what you might charge for it? It's 2 layers of 8" round and 2 layers of 12" round. Filled and iced with buttercream. Decorated with fondant. Everything is edible except the one duck and the bathtub. The ducks around the top layers are candy melts.
I'm so bad at pricing my cakes. Please, just throw some numbers at me.
Special thanks for inspiration from "KarenOR" and all the other ducky cake decorators here.
I guess you should just figure out what you would charge per serving... According to Wilton's party cake guide, this cake would be around 60 servings... So $75 would be charging $1.25 per serving.
That may be a little low especially with the fondant work you would be doing... $1.50 per serving would be $90.
The worst thing I have found about charging low prices for you cakes is that everyone will expect you to continue to keep the prices down. If people like the work you do (which this person obviously did), they will be willing to pay for you time and effort...
I just discovered the pricing matrix in the cake business forum and I think it would be closer to $105 with all of the fondant and man hours...
I think at least $100 is reasonable. that is a really great cake with alot of time in it. Good Luck with everything - Super cute cake!
That's really a beautiful cake cake!!! I'm with pinkoppossum on that. $100 is a good price. With the work and fondant, that's reasonnable. And can I say once again, that's beautiful work!!!! Don't underprice yourself!!

WOW!!! I was thinking $45 or $50. Thank you all for the opinions and pricing. Compliments too of course. I appreciate each and every one of you!

How much did you have in supplies? I would take that into account as well as labor time - - maybe 3x your cost!

Great idea... thanks. I think I have around $25-28 in supplies. See how bad I am at this pricing stuff?
Thanks!

That'd be E120 from me (about $150!), but then as I've explained before, my basic costs here are much higher than in the US (I have to import virtually everything!) - so $100 seems a good price to me!
I'm with you on this pricing thing, hard to tell, I live in an area where people don't want to pay a lot for cakes, mostly farmers around here. I think it's definately worth the money, everyone is suggesting, but I'd have trouble telling some $50, like you said.....I guess I shouldn't just give my work away either, good lesson learned.
I would charge $1.75 per serving ($1.00 for cake and $.75 for fondant). The $1.00 is my base price for nonwedding cakes and the extra charge for the fondant if for any cake I make. I used to charge only $.60 for fondant but found that I was really only breaking even after purchasing all of the fondant and factoring in the time to decorate it.
Hope that helps.
Thank you all for the compliments and the pricing information. I really appreciate it!

I love your duckie cake, I would not go any lower than $2.00 per serving which would be $120 + the figures (details) $15., so around 135-140......
I konw this sounds like a lot for a b-day cake, but if they want something like this that will make a statement they should know that it comes at a deeper price, otherwise they can just order a sheet cake.............
