I'm going to do my bosses daughters birthday cake next weekend. He's decided on Dora and I wanted to do a Dora and Boots FBCT. I've never done one before but have read and re-read the How To article here a billion times and about a million posts here in the forum. I attempted a practice one today and here is how it turned out.

I didn't put it on a cake, just my practice board that I iced. My questions are:
1. How do you get your base icing on your transfer without pulling up your transfer? (Boots right foot lost his bottom outline do to this)I think next week I'll pipe it with the basketweave tip and smooth out that way.

2. Do you smooth/angle the FBCT(once its come back to room temp) into the cake's icing then pipe the border around it? Or do you just cut your transfer so its nice and even and then pipe the border next to it?

Thanks for all your help! This is the greatest site on the internet I've found for these type of things and everyone here is always SO helpful, even to newbies like myself.

How long did you freeze it?

I don't smooth out the edges or anything, I just put a border around it.

It really doesn't look that bad....a lot better than my first, lol! Maybe you should just try another one.

good luck!

I had it in the freezer for 90 minutes. I figured since it was just a small one I didn't need to let it sit longer. I might attempt another one tomorrow since I didn't use all the frosting. Which brings up another question, can I still use the same frosting next week? Does it keep? I don't see why not. I might have to rewhip it though.

Yes you can reuse the icing. It will be fine for a week or so in the fridge, just rewhip before you use it.

Boots came out really well. I would suggest that you make the border around the picture itself larger. I will usually encircle my picture with a border, kind of like a picture frame, then when I ice over the entire transfer, I go right up to the border making sure it's height is even with the picture. Then when I put it on the cake, I put the border around the entire thing. In this way, your picture will stand out better. Take a look at my Darth Vader cake in my photos.

Partsgirl25 - Thank you. The only reason it doesn't look like a 1st is because of all the folks here and their beautiful and excellent pictures.

ChrisJ - Your Darth Vader is excellent. I like your idea of the frame.

I try to add an "edge" when I do a FBCT, too.

Check out the Survivor cake in my photos. I actually overpiped the edge and then after it was frozen, used a super-super-sharp knife to kind of carve the FBCT edges neatly. After I plopped it on the cake, I piped another "edge" of black around the whole FBCT plaque.
