I have done 3 scratch recipes in the past 3 yrs. and they have all been great staying leveled. but with boxes i always have to cut the top to loose the hump. Is this normal? I have tried baking strips, nails.. you name it. still get uneven cakes. but not with scratch. can anyone explain this to me?

Can't tell you exactly why, but yes, I have had the same experience. At the bakery I used to work at (packaged mix) we lowered the temp of the oven and that helped a bit but didn't erase the problem altogether.
