I would like to try and make my own impression mats. Has anyone ever done this? Any tips and tricks out there on how it could be done?

Thanks icon_smile.gif

I have not tried it myself, but somewhere I read that you can use a glue gun to make the pattern and press that into your frosting. I don't remember what kind of medium that they used to put the glue on?

Wanted to add: I have also heard of using piping gel and letting that dry and then using that to press into the frosting...

I too would like information on it. I bought the mat but I don't know if you should cut it to fit around the cake or what. Someone said they bought the diamond stamp and just pressed on the cake.

There was a thread on here about this a little while back, I don't know where it is right now, but they talked about using a plastic tablecloth, and plastic placemat like you get at a dollar store.

I think that was in the thread about "unusual things turned into cake decorating tools" deijha.........I made an impression mat using sculpey clay, I needed something to resemble a stone wall...so I rolled out a hunk of clay and pushed little pebbles into it and then pulled them out, leaving an imprint, then I baked the clay per the directions and once it was done it's hard like a piece of plastic....and I just pushed it down on my fondant and it worked perfectly!!!! then I heard that the sculpey clay is not considered food safe (even though it says non-toxic once it's baked)....some say that you shouldn't actually touch it to food ...so I just put a sheet of plastic wrap over it and it still works just as well, and no worries about poisoning anyone.....I also formed one chunk of clay into a small rectangle...meant to look like a brick and then baked it and used it to stamp into another piece of clay making a brick wall...and I use this in the same way. It's very inexpensive...I think I paid .79 for the clay on sale at A.C. Moore and they work wonderfully......I'll bet you could roll out a nice sized sheet of the clay and use a diamond stamp or any stamp for that matter....and just repeat the pattern and make virtually any kind of mat you want!!!! These molds are reuseable and I just throw them in the top rack of my dishwasher and they're fine.

icon_smile.gif I got one from Michaels that was made to be for a school project..it is suppose to be the Adobe Roof (red orange) of a Mission (Church)...I used it for Fondant.. The results look like almost basket weave. icon_smile.gif
