How do you get black black black frosting?? I'm doing an 'over the hill' cake and need lots of black. Can I do it without making the frosting taste nasty??

Start with a dark chocolate buttercream and add Americolor black gel to that - it doesn't take much to get it black then - let it sit overnight and it will get darker still - hope that helps!

I agree with bonjovibabe. That's exactly what I do.

amberlicious, do you have a specialty cake store nearby?? That's where i get my americolors. Wilton black will work too if you need it for tomorrow. Just start with a very dark chocolate base. It actually tastes really good!

I live in Las Vegas- HUGE city- no specialty baking stores. Maybe I should open one. Anyway, I'll start with dark chocolate and add wilton- see what I can get. Thanks for the help!

This isn't really going to help with your immediate need but, I just used my airbrush to make a black guitar. I'll tell you honestly just b/c of the ease of a nice solid black, I would buy an airbrush just to do black icing. What ease and solid color and the people eating the cake didn't end up with black mouths!!!

I do agree with the other posters about starting with choc icing and adding black.

I agree with bonjovibabe, start with a chocolate to tone down the nasty taste that sometimes happens.
