Ok...I have a problem. I have a workspace, that I guess would be considered average height in a kitchen. My problem is, I am 6'6" so stanard height for me is not so...When I decorate, I have to bend over and it really hurts my back, especially if I'm doing something intricate that takes time...Anyone have any suggestions? I tried the sitting down but that was not the best..LOL Thanks for the advice...
Have you tried getting a sturdy box or something to put your cake on to bring it higher?
I am very average height but I still usually frost my cake standing up and do the detailed work (especially the sides of the cake) while I am sitting. Even when I am sitting I put my cake and turntable on a steady box to bring it closer to eye level.
I've also used a huge pail/bucket I got from home depot. I was trying to get the cake to eye level to add some decorations on the side.
i too have been complaining about back problems. i never even thought about it being from decorating??
I have arthritis in my upper back and it always flares up after doing a cake. My problem is not that I'm too tall, though. I probably need the pail to stand on. LOL!! I'm only 5'1".
I have had to major back surgers and it sucks when you cant bend... So I too maked me something to make the cake up higher I have taken two wilton turn tables and found a bowl that will go in the middle turned one upside down and then placed the bowl in there and then the other one on top and it adds some highth to working on my cakes... Some times I am able to sit down when doing cakes dependings on what I am doing .. YOU might try sitting down and seeing if that will work for you .. OR get you a high bar stool and sit on that at your counter...
Mochaboi, when you sat down, did you sit down at your counter? If you did I bet your knees hit the cupboards underneath
Try sitting down at a table, and then bring your workspace up higher if needed.
6'6" is pretty tall in my book, I am 5'2.5", I'd probably have to stand on a box to look you straight in the face A friend of ours who is currently serving over in Baghdad is as tall as you (I think) and whenever I stand in front of him all I see is his belly When my husband and I got a bigger car (went from a Chevy Cavalier to a Dodge Intrepid) he was very grateful to us.
back problems is what made me get into cake decorating i can sit or stand as long as I need to and if my health is not good I don't have to bake when I feel good I can do as much as my body lets me.
Well, I certainly sympathize with all the aches and pains since I have arthritis everywhere and am facing double knee replacement surgery as soon as I get the...can I say "guts"...to go into the hospital to get it done. My point is that I haven't found any position that is comfortable for cake decorating, but I do it anyway, like you all do, it is such fun to be able to make some thing that looks pretty and (hopefully) tastes good too!
Mochaboi, I purchased a table that is sort of like the rolling tables they use in the hospital, and it is adjustable for height, so it might be to your benefit to look into one. I got mine on sale at Office Max a few weeks ago. I keep my projector attached to it and I just roll it wherever I want to work on my cakes. I think they advertise it as a laptop table, something like that! Janice
