Lbs To Cups.......

I don't have a scale to measure things with and I use cups all of the time....I know this might sound stupid but how much is 3.5 lbs converted to cups. I don't understand why a recipe would be using cups most of the way through and then use lbs????
Any help would be appreciated!

Sounds like the CC Icing recipe I just used last weekend.

I thought the same thing! I just eye-balled it and used one 2 lb. bag and about 3/4 of the second bag. The consistency and taste seemed the same to me even after making 4 batches of it! Whew- that was a lot of icing!

Anyway- hope this helps a bit since I don't know how to convert.

My guess is that the recipe calls for cups when refering to liquids and pounds for solids. There are generally 2 cups to a pound. 1 cup is 8oz. But 1 cup of flour will weigh different than 1 cup of walnuts. My suggestion would be to get out the bathroom scale put a bowl on it, adjust it to 0lb. and start weighing. I hope this helps.

I don't know why I thought this was such a problem.....probably because when I have to convert measurements I suck! I must have slept through all that in school.

When I did the conversion on the net ksgirl is about right! I would use the bathroom scale however, it is in a box somewhere I still haven't unpacked it yet! Maybe that's why I'm gaining weight? Well, that's what I'll blame it on LOL!!

With powdered sugar, there is approximately 4 cups by dry measure to one pound by weight, it isn't exact but it is close.
Unfortunately you cannot go by the 2 cups is 16 ounces which is a pound because one is by weight and one is by displacement and it doesn't work out for many things.

Heehee, well kiddo, you know where that knowledge comes from, from converting our 2.54 Kg bags into pounds or cups with American recipes, haha, great fun, isn't it? I am still back in Imperial measurement days. Oh and if you get an American recipe calling for a quart, their quart is 32 ounces by liquid measure, ours is 40 ounces by the old Imperial system.

I am so horrible for converting measurments.....my husband says to me tonight "you better get better at this if you're going to decorate cakes!" I said "that's why I married you honey, to do all my converting for me! lol" He was quiet after that.
Thanks for the comment on my cake! I'm not happy with it at all and if you can give me any pointers on it I would really appreciate it! For some reason my drop flowers just would not work! On a positive note I did learn alot from it and just need to practice, practice!

With drop flowers it is the consistency of the icing and the way you twist your wrist. Big help, right, not! They look pretty good to me kiddo, just takes practice. I think you are doing great!

I have always heard this as well, but I have a 2lb bag of powder sugar that says there is approximately 7.5 cups in it. Which would explain why if you measure about about 4 cups there is usually closer to 3 left.

It is just a close approximate due to the way the sugar settles too. If you sifted then measured you will get more cups per pound, the 4 cups is likely somewhere in the middle. That is why you are better going by weight. I have my recipe so that it goes by sifted cups which makes a difference too. But pretty well the standard is an approximate estimate of 4 cups per pound.
