My first wedding cake was for an old friend from high school. She picked a pretty easy cake with 4 tiers stacked to look like a staircase. It was really quite easy. The cake was decorated mainly with a #2 or 3 tip with the squiggly lines all over it. About 2 hours before they were scheduled to arrive I was pretty much done with the cake. I decided to stack the cake for a test run (since I would be transporting the cake unassembled). I had to set each tiers toward the edge of the cake below so it would create a staircase. I had all 4 tiers set up and was just making some finishing touches. I figured I would clean up my area and then disassemble the cake and go. WELL....... I hear a THUD! I turn around and the top tier is flopped upside down on top of my tray of decorating tips!!! The bottom cake is crushed from all of the weight of the tiers above it. I picked up the top tier first and took all of the tips out that were inbedded into the cake. Then, I start crying hysterically! After a few minutes of crying and screaming and swearing, I realized I had to get it together because somehow I had to fix this!
I collected myself and somehow "glued" the bottom layer together with frosting. I filled in all of the holes in the top layer with frosting. I also had to touch up a lot of the cake because with the fall and with me having to pick it all up with my hands, it was very messy.
I touched up all of the detail. I then realized I had all of the tiers set back too far and the weight was off center. I repositioned all of the dowels and added about 10 more!!!
I ended up delivering the cake on time. I assembled it at the reception hall in time too. I was so nervous that it was going to happen again. I stayed for a little while to keep my eye on it. I was SO nervous, I didnt want to leave. Well, needlesstosay, I did leave and the wedding went on as planned. That is all I thought about until my friend called me the next day to thank me for the beautiful cake I made!
I asked her how everything was. She said that everyone loved it. I asked her how it looked when it was cut up. I was worried that the pieces would be all crumbles since I had "glued" a lot of it together.
I ended up telling her the story and she said that she would've had no idea! I was SO relieved!!!
So, I guess the moral of my story is two things: to test your assembly at home with enough time to fix any mishaps, and to allow yourself a few minutes to freak out when something goes wrong, but to get your head right back in the game, because most things can be fixed!
Sorry this was so long. I just hope someone can learn from my story.

LOL! I'm so glad you were able to get it all together, and in time, too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I usually stack mine once I'm done with them just to make sure I've got everything right, but next time I won't think twice about it!!

Good Luck with your next wedding cake!!!

Let me tell you that you are one brave lady. It's a nightmare to have a wedding cake or any other cake to just fall and with little time I may add.

I almost drop a cake for a birthday party and caught the darn cake in the air. Well, I thought I would have a heart attack. I had to sit down for a few and have a little wine to calm my nerves down.

Congratulation on your success.

Wow. What a good recovery. I had a cake slide apart on the way to the reception. I forgot the dowels. We all live and learn.
