I'm just making cakes for my family right now but after every party someone else wants a cake. I would appreciate any info re: selling from home or handing out a business card. Maybe just a point in the right direction. I looked at some web sites but I'm not finding any specifics.
Thanks!
Food-related home businesses are not allowed in California. They won't even consider it.
BUMP!!
I have been searching for the same info. I am currently residing in Burlingame, which s San Mateo County. Anybody else out there in my area that can help as well?
bummer.....
Any other options? So basically, you can't bake and sell cakes, but you can bake and give them away?
We live in one of the toughest states regarding home business. And food prep is not allowed. I believe you can advertise and have business if you bake your cakes at a different location with a commercial kitchen, like a church or school. Somewhere along the way I learned about this. Some small restaurants may even consider letting you 'rent' time to use their kitchens.
Here's another question.......There is a cute mom & pop grocery store down the street from me. The owner and his mother are really nice, and we have become somewhat close over the few years we have living there - and they are interested in carrying some of my "mini" cakes.
He also currently carries another ladies cookies. I am guessing this is not legal as well, right? If I did decide to let him carry some, what sort of issues could the store owner and myself be getting into? He does know that I am not licensed, and he did not express concern that he really cares.
Any ideas?
I don't know what legal issues you would be facing in the event that the healt department found out, butif you are close can you cook in his store? Kind of like ngarza07 mentioned - maybe rent space or time form him?
I'm not sure if he has a kitchen or oven there - it is just a small grocery/market type of store that we run to whenever we're too lazy to go to Safeway.
I think he was expecting me to make them at home, and transport to his store to sell. I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask if he has an oven back there. Though he is connected with a small taqueria and maybe I could use theirs.
hmmm, I may have to look into that. Thanks!
the store owner would be violating the rules to sell items not legally prepared, as would you.
His liability insurer could void his policy.
