Hi everyone! Fist time posting and I am so nervous about my cake. This is my first attempt at a wedding cake that my niece would like me to do. There are three more tiers with pillars and fountains than this. Yikes! After many numerous attempts at different icings (only because most are too sweet for me), I decided to do a practice of the side cake for Easter. It is white cake, cream cheese filling, buttercream icing with royal icing roses, hearts and triangles. The top roses are fondant that I had left over from class. Any advice or suggestions would be very helpful.

One thing that my husband noticed was that the icing on the bottom layer was not level, of course he didn't say anything until the top layer was on icon_cry.gif

Oh, and I tripped taking it out to the car and almost had a trunck full of cake!!! icon_lol.gif

Thanks for looking

I think it looks very good; going in my faves. The only thing I would say, which probably won't be an issue for the actual cake since you said the top roses were left over, is to make sure the flowers match in color. Is that the color pink, the real light, that is going to be used? Its very pretty. Did you use a cake marker of some kind to know where to put the side borders, to make sure they were even? I think you did a great job ~ you will be your worst critic, trust me! Everyone else will see pretty, and you will see every bump! Great job, and good luck!

I did level the cakes, I just got carried away with the icing. I went out and bought a large metal putty knive for the next time!

Thank you all for the nice comments. You are right, I probably will be my worst critic. There won't be any flowers on the top of this cake, it is going to have stairs to the other one. Good golly, what have I gotten in too!

Overall it does look good. Honestly, in general icings are sweet..that's one charateristic of icing, to me the sweetness of the icing does not play an important part. Appearance is the first thing that gives the impression. I think it is psychological, if it looks good, then it should taste good. That's my opnioin.. I'd say good job. thumbs_up.gificon_smile.gif
