My husband hates fondant. I have tried MMF but took the cake somewhere and he didnt get to try it. I thought it was good just sweet. I haven't tried the others. Can I get your opinions on which you like the best and get the most compliments on? Thank you.

I prefer Satin Ice... thumbs_up.gif I don't like MMF or rolled buttercream!! thumbsdown.gif

I like Satin Ice too! MMF is ok - but I hate making it, especially when you need a lot. I've never tried rolled BC.

Satin Ice is better when you're going to be using a lot of it or on a large cake. I've never used it personally, but my friend did and said it was very easy to work with. I've made the MMF several times. It tastes good, but it's always been a little tempermental for me. Rolled BC is VERY soft. I haven't been brave enough to try it on a cake.

Please help me. I have heard Chcopan, Mill Lane and Satin Ice. Where can I find these? Are they all some type of Fondant?

Ok well I guess I will try Satin Ice. Maybe he will like it. I love the look of fondant and want to make a fish cake for him without him whinning about the fondant being nasty-lol. Thanks for your help.

Where would be the most inexpensive place to find Satin Ice? I would like to try it, but not buy a whole huge tub of it then discover I didn't like it.

I don't know where you cn buy it however you can get the recipe of here and make it. Which is what I am planning to do. I made the MMF and it wasn't hard.

Well, I tried Pettinice, both the vanilla and chocolate and thought it was pretty good (especially, if you compare it to the Wilton fondant that's just nasty!) but I wanted to find a cheaper alternative ($6 a lb.) so I tried the marshmallow fondant. I didn't have that many problems making it but in order to achieve the consistency I wanted I had to add more powder sugar and it became too sweet for me. I've aso made rolled buttercream but I've never covered a cake with it, just cookies. It tasted fine but it has sort of a greasy look and yes, it's very soft. Last week when I was down in California I went to a cake decorating store called Sugar Spun and saw they carried Satin Ice so I bought a 2 lb tub and took it back home with me. I tried it yesterday and it is handsdown the best fondant I've tried so far, and very easy to work with. No cake decorating store in my area sells it, that I know of, so I think the only alternative is to order it on line. The problem is that they just sell huge amounts (like a 15 or 30lb tub) and I don't need that much (I don't do this professionally) so I'm trying to figure out what to do next.

I just went to their website and I can't find a link to ordering. It gives a telephone number, though:

I wrote them an email and asked them where I could buy it and how much it is. I'll keep you posted.

Also, it says in their website that you can refrigerate or freeze a cake covered with their fondant. icon_eek.gif Anybody tried that????

Ps: I just tried www.sugarcraft.com and if you click of food items, (left of the screen) and then click on rolled fondant, you'll see they sell Pentinice and also Satin Ice.

Just to put my too cents in...

I did not care for the satin ice, I much rather liked the pettinence. I do a lot of figure molding, and the satin ice was too stick for my use. I had a hard time rolling it out, it kept sticking to me, to my work space, rolling pin, but it would not stick to itself!!!
Which, is a problem for me because I do a ton of figure molding....

I have heard realy great things about Fondx, so I can't wait to try that type of fondant....

Florimbio, I just used satic ice to mold some figures, I added some gumtex and it worked fine, no sticking... I have also heard good things about Fondx but I think it's an Australian brand and have no idea where to get it in the States.

The cheapest place to order it would be directly from the manufaturer... The only problem is you have to order 40lbs at a time. If you knew a couple of poeple who decorate, you could go in together.

Satin Ice is also carried by the Sur La Table cooking store. We have them in Virginia - but I know they also have a website.

Just adding my thoughts - I made the MMF for a wedding cake a couple weeks ago. I think I like it for smaller cakes but I found it hard to roll it out large enough for the 14 inch round, even after adding a ton of shortening and glycerin - but we finally got it to work. But only after a LOT of time. It also isn't as white as I'd like, so I used Satin Ice for the white checkers on the race car groom's cake. I found Satin Ice so much easier to use and roll out but it's too expensive to use a lot of it. I like the taste but I have a huge sweet tooth so who knows. I do know that the Wilton stuff is nasty, nasty, nasty and I will never, ever use it again now that I've discovered MMF! It's just a lot of work to make it for a large cake like a wedding cake. But it was my first wedding cake and I wanted it to be really special and didn't want to do just a buttercream cake, so I put in the extra time willingly. You can check the picture of the fan cake in my gallery if you want to see what an MMF cake looks like. I think it pretty much looks like regular fondant, although I found I couldn't get it quite as smooth as regular fondant, but with the decorations on it, I didn't think it was that noticable.
I've never made rolled buttercream but I've seen cakes with it and I don't like the shiny appearance - I like the matte look of fondant. Also, I heard it tears really easily and is hard to cover a cake with, so most people use it for cookies instead.

Has anyone tried the Satin Icing (fondant) recipe listed on this site in the featured recipes? Was wondering how lemony a flavor it has, and if it was easy to work with.
