Has anyone simulated fabric weave using buttercream? I'm making a sewing themed cake and making two dummy layers with fondant and the real one with buttercream. I can texture the fondant and want to make the buttercream look like fabric. Appreciate any suggestions.

I did a sewing theme cake however I made the cake look like a sewing basket by doing the basketweave. Look in my photos to see what I mean. I know it's not fabric but it might help. The only other thing I can think of is Scott's papertowel leaves a nice texture if you press it over a crusted BC.

Know the Viva paper towel method for smoothing buttercream? If you have a piece of scrap muslin, burlap or (gasp) dupioni silk - okay, maybe wallie world fake dupioni (something with pronounced texture) you could try using that to just imprint the weave. Though I would be careful to press lightly and use a good crusting buttercream.
Then, if that doesn't show up all that well, you could use some type of dust or powder and literally use a powder puff to apply it. It should settle into the crevices and highlight the texturing.

Thanks for your suggestions. I was thinking I'd do a basketweave with a round tip. I know, it would take forever but I was hoping someone else may have already tried it. Anyone?

I tied to do a fabric weave with a round tip and it just didn't look like what I envisioned so I decided not to do it after all. I just posted the picture of my final prouct. Thanks for your suggestions.
