I'm making the gift/package cake for the first time....where the lid is lifted slighty and the tissue paper is coming out.....I have some questions.

First I dont have dowels...but I remember seeing something about being able to do it with bamboo skewers or cookie sticks even....I do not feel confident enough in doing it with straws...I made the lid of cake and Im afraid its too heavy for that.....how do you do this.....I know the stick will go through the bottom...but does the lid just rest on the tip of the stick...or does it go through?? And if it does...how in the world would I get it through?

Another question....can I assemble it now and then take it to where its going...or should I assemble it there?

and one more...but not about lifting.....ummm, this cake was requested with a lemon custard like filling...I didnt think about this before wrapping the cake in fondant......I cant refrigerate it because of the fondant....will the filling be ok???

Thanks for any help on this!!

I've never done one of these cakes....but I think I know what you're talking about...I think I saw one on Collette Peters' website.....I can only tell you from personal experience....the cake in my avatar was covered in fondant (the pot) and I refrigerated it overnight and nothing happened...it actually just firmed up making the cake more stable in my opinion.....What I would do if I were making this gift cake (keep in mind, I haven't made one LOL)....I would put the lid on it's own cake board...and cover the sides with icing so you can't see it's on a cake board.....and then put dowls down through the lid, the cake board, and into the cake below it...to anchor it. As for getting the dowel through...most people sharpen the end of it and I've even heard of using a hammer to gently tap it through the cardboard cake boards.

I have made lemon curd filling for family cakes and just left them out for up to 3 days. They were just fine. Please post a picture of the cake when you are done.

thanks!! I fell better abou tthe filling now! thumbs_up.gif

I've already made the lid and covered it with fondant...it is on its own little board....but I didnt think to put any supports through it first!!! .....I dont have dowels...but I do have the cookie sticks and skewers....do you think those will work??

skewers might work...since they're already pointy at one end.......I would just put more than you think you'll need !!! Hope everything works out.... I'll feel really bad if your fondant gets nasty or something.........a lot of people say DONT refrigerate....but personally I haven't had any issues.....maybe because my cake was just in a box and not wrapped tightly with anything...because if there's any condensation that can make the fondant yucky.....but myself....I didn't have any trouble, just brought the cake out to room temp and left if for a couple hours before we ate it and it was fine..I even refrigerated the gumpaste flowers and had nightmares the whole night that they all fell apart and were droopy LOL I worked for like 3 weeks on those stupid flowers.......anyhow...I would go with the skewers to go all the way through the cake board.......hope everything works out!!! By the way you put the support the entire cake when it's already assembled......oh, or did you mean you didn't put any supports in the lower cake in order to support the weight of the lid??? If you haven't stacked them yet...I would say stick some of your lollipop sticks...cut to the right length of course....into the bottom cake to support the lid cake on it's board...then drive the skewer through both cakes to make sure the lid stays on while you're driving the cake..........us non skid shelf liner to keep the box in place in the car.

ok...I did it!

I made holes in my cake behind the bow...and didnt think before I put the bow on that I shouldve done one under it!

but........

I ended up tossing the skewers...they were more of a hassle than anythign I actually got away with cookie sticks....I supported the bottom first....then I did different heights laid the lid on then put two in to the lid and then into the cake!

I had to fill my holes with left over icing!

I hope it makes it to my mom!!!

Thank ya'll for helping out with your answers!!!

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!! I really feel good about this cake....and to get all your compliments makes it ten times better!!

Do you know everyone on Gods green earth has seen this cake...I emailed it to anyone I could!! Except my mom!!! She hasnt seen it yet!!! She decided to come here for it tomorrow!!! icon_surprised.gif

I went ahead and stuck it in the fridge....with that lemon creamcheese filling...I'm afraid the ebola virus will break out around here....and it will be because of my infected cake!

I am sooo flattered that you want my instructions!!! I will definitely give you what I did.....I will type it up.....but ge978 will have to do a foloow up on what it takes to keep me from jumping off the edge!!! I'm telling you she gave me plenty of "BREATHE" pms through it all!!!
