Don't Know What To Do? Should I Take The Cake?

Hi! last night I made a bunny cake to take to my daughter's kinder party.
The problem is this:- Monday and Tuesday I was quite ill with a bad cold and really had energy to do nothing because my head was so stuffed up.
Yesterday I still had the cold, but felt better than I had. I was very careful making the cake, washing my hands lots (as I always do).
Would you take it to the party? I was thinking maybe I should show the teacher that I made it and then buy something for them to have instead. You see the thing is the Teacher asked for volunteers to make some things for the party. She isn't expecting a decorated cake like this, so I guess it doesn't matter. Seems a bit of a waste though, and it would have been an opportunity to tell people know I do this.
Help!? The party is today at 2pm! icon_cry.gif

Melissaanne, I missed this earlier, what did you do? I would say that if you were careful, and it sounds like you were, it would be okay.

I'll just bet you were much more careful than they are in the bakery. Here they don't even wear gloves.I would take the cake.

We didn't wear gloves for a lot of the "behind the scenes" work (until the health insp. would walk in) but we always wore them out front while dealing with customers. My thing is, gloves get as dirty and germy as hands do!

It should be fine...I've had to make a couple cakes when I had a cold, because it wasn't like I could call the night before and say "Well since I have a cold I guess your kid won't be getting his birthday cake after all" so I just tried to keep my hands clean, obviously didn't sneeze or cough anywhere near the cake, etc. It should be fine!

I've also had to make cake before when the stomach virus was going through my kids...they weren't in the kitchen and nothing touched anything I was working with, but still I am pretty germ conscious...but again, nothing I could do! I never heard of any outbreaks from the parties the cakes went to. icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks, all this feed back is really helpful. Still undecided at the moment. My husband is my main concern, he doesn't think I should take it as little kids always go for the icing. Have any of you ever had tell someone you couldn't do a cake at the last minute because you were sick?

What's wrong with the icing?

I've never canceled a cake because of sickness... And I sent a fancy decorated cake to my son's K Christmas party...without my son, who was very sick! They knew he was sick and still loved the cake anyway so... I guess it was ok!

No telling what germs bakers have when they make our cakes...or chefs...or fast food workers...anyway. icon_biggrin.gif

icon_smile.gif By all means please do !! you are very thougthful person by making a cake and by considering whether you should or should not take it based on your health. You were very good in making sure that your hands were clean and all that. Peronally, I would not mention it to the teacher, because you know how people are. What they don't know won't hurt them. icon_smile.gif

Here's my viewpoint, as I have 3 children...one in school...the other two who are in the nursery at church and at the park quite frequently...lol. There's more of a chance that they will catch a cold, or whatever, from each other on a day-to-day basis just while in the classroom than from eating a cake that you made while on the 'last leg' of a cold...which you were very careful about while making it. LOL icon_lol.gif

I think that colds aren't still contagious towards the end...in fact, if I'm right...it seems I've heard from doctors & nurses that colds are MORE/MOST contagious before you even have any symptoms yourself. And the 'contagiousness' lessens with each day you have it. Of course, if you're sneezing directly into someone else's face, or in this case..directly onto a cake and just left it there and served it anyway...then someone could possibly catch a cold. But I'm sure that didn't happen...LOL icon_lol.gificon_razz.gif I'd take it...it's highly unlikely anyone will catch what you had. icon_smile.gif

Well, I decided to take the cake. Thanks for the support guys!! Everything turned out in the end- not quite how I pictured it though.
We had to drop the kids off at 12pm, so I took the cake then.
Parents were invited to a Easter Bonnet Parade at 230pm. So when I came back at 230pm the children were eating their afternoon tea. When they were nearly finished the teacher showed everyone the cake and thanked me for making it. They decided to cut it later.
There were so many activities to get through that in the end we didn't have time to cut it, so they asked me if I minded taking it home. On this occassion - no, I don't mind. If I hadn't of been worried about it, I guess I would have cut it up myself and handed it around. I told them next time I will make cup cakes. icon_smile.gif
Loking around the room there were that many children that had really bad colds, I don't know why I was worried about it. They all had a fun time and so did I. Thanks again, and Happy Easter.

Excellent job! This is so cute. What a shame they didn't get to eat it.

As JennT said...the germs are constant at this age in school. I don't think you would have made a difference. You probably got it from there in the first place! HA HA

That is SO cute!!!!!!!!! I'm kinda surprised they asked you if you minded taking it back home... icon_confused.gif That's an awful cute and fancy cake to not cut...but...hey it made you feel better, anyway!

Yeah I guess cupcakes are easier for little kids, but not nearly so fun to decorate!
