Here is my extender recipe I use with all the boxed Betty Crocker mixes:

1 Cup of Flour
3/4 Cup Sugar
1 teaspoon Baking Powder
2/3 Cup water
1/2 Cup crisco Oil

Gives you about an extra cup cup and a half of batter

I use the extender for white cakes all the time! I makes them taste homemade!

Once, I made the extender all by itself and baked it in a 6" pan to see if it really made a cake. It did! But it was really sweet - probably too sweet for a stand alone cake. It also was a bit shiney on top - the egg or glazed sugar in the batter I suppose.

Well I ended up selling it for $7!! I got a call from someone who just wanted a little "I love you" cake for her man and she loved it.

I do not follow the box when I use the extender. I doctor my cakes as usual and add the extender and have never had an issue. So doctor away.

There are many different extender recipes floating around. Most that I have seen are ingredients to add in addition to those listed on the box, but I've seen a couple where they are "alternate" directions, so you don't use the ingredients listed on the box, only the ones in the extender recipe.

Be sure to check carefully when you try a recipe.

I think a good clue to watch for is the number of eggs - if it calls for only one egg, it's probably in addition to what's on the box. If it calls for 3 or more, it's probably instead of what's on the box.

If you do a search for "extender", there have been a couple of threads in the last few months with lots of information in them!

Laura.
