How hard is it to color fondant?

I'm doing a bee themed baby shower cake and I am going to make fondant bees. Now, I've never even touched fondant before, so I'm am extremely clueless when it comes to this medium. Any advice, tips, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've only been decorating cakes for 6 weeks, so my skills are very limited. HELP!!

I use the MMF fondant and color it after I've melted the marshmellows but before I add the powdered sugar. Some people knead it in after its setup...but I'm lazy...

hope it helps;

Stupid question number 2. Do you just us the Wilton colors to color fondant or is their some or secret coloring agent that I don't know about?

I told ya'll I was clueless.

No ancient secret, just use whatever you would use to color BC. I used Wilton gel colors in my MMF, but I needed a really deep red and blue. If you were doing pastels, you could probably even get away with food coloring.

I definitely recommend adding the color to the melted marshmallows before adding the powdered sugar for a MMF that needs to cover a whole cake. Don't worry, the color will remain the same even after adding all that powdered sugar.

For little accent pieces it's easier to knead in the color by hand. Wear baggies or wash your hands right away though, those Wilton colors stain! HTH.

Just wanted to mention that if you're using boxed fondant, ( I don't know about the marshmallow fondant as I haven't tried to make it yet) your colors will fade a little after a while if you're drying your decorations. So if you're coloring your fondant and drying out your bees (I think that's what you said you were making) really far in advance, just keep that in mind. Also, if you mix in your paste, you may find that that the color will intensify after a couple of hours, just like how buttercream does.

Thanks to everyone that answered me. I'm not brave enough to make MMF yet, so I'm going tomorrow to go buy some Satin Ice and try and color it up. Next, I'll be trying out bee making and some other weird ideas I am having for this baby shower cake.

Thanks you again.

...lol...you sound so enthused about the whole thing....I was just gonna say that if you ever do make marshmallow fondant, putting the color in right after you've melted the marshmallows is waaayyyy easier than kneading it in. Lookin' forward to seein' your pics!!!
