i followed the directions and it just turned out horrible! i used the baby buggy pan and it just says to "outline" each section so i did that and i went to start filling in with stars and my stars would not stick to the cake! i didn't know i would have to frost the entire thing in order to get the stars to stick... is there another way of doing this that i'm unaware of?

I'm sorry you had problems!! The directions didn't tell you to ice a thin layer first???? I've not heard of any other way to do it but I bet spreading a fruit filling lightly over the cake first would allow the stars to stick as well. Do you have any icing on the cake??? Any stars that did stick? If so, you could ice those in and spread more icing all over the cake and then do your stars after you outline it again. I hope this helps you!!!
Good luck!

you shouldn't have to frost entire cake to fill in with stars. depending on design you should only frost smooth the sides. Was your frosting to stiff/thin maybe. Not sure what to say about the stars not sticking.

Mommabuda,
Perhaps the buttercream had too much sugar and was hard to stick on the cake.A small amount of water would soften it . Depends also on what recipe you used.

you might have had an issue with your icing...sounds like maybe it was too stiff.

I hope you don't get discouraged and not try again. You'll get it. Good Luck!!

thanks everyone... i sorta *fixed* it but i think i would have to ice the whole cake first with a thin layer in order for them to stick. i used wilton's BC and i had it medium consistency... i added a little water to make it thinner after i was having problems and it still didn't help. i spread some BC out over the whole cake (kinda sloppily) but it worked well then (until the frosting dried then i had problems with the stars sticking again). well, i guess i learned a lot... glad i did a test run with this cake before my baby shower icon_smile.gif thanks again!

i'll post a pic of the cake in my pix so you can see it icon_smile.gif

Make sure your icing is medium consistency to begin with. When you make your icing to frost the cake first, do not add meringe powder, since the powder forms a crust on the cake, making it hard for other decorations to stick. Make sure that you are applying even pressure to your squeeze, and stop squeezing BEFORE you lift your tip straight up. Remember, stars are done at a 90 degree angle.
