I'm just starting to work with fondant more and I have a question. Is shimmer dust the same as luster dust?

I went to Michael's to buy luster dust, but the "shimmer dust" was all they had. It came in color or metallics. I chose the metallics that came with silver, gold and pearl in the package.

Any tips or information will be appreciated. icon_biggrin.gif

From another post....
LUSTER (LUSTRE) DUSTS
Give a metallic sheen. Available in a huge range of colors. Not water soluble.
If they contain Iron Blue or Chromium Oxide, they must be labeled for Decorative use only. In some countries they are considered edible, others not. Mix with clear alcohol or oil based flavorings or use dry.

SPARKLE DUSTS
Just like lustre dusts, but larger grain size. Same rule, mix with clear alcohol or oil based flavorings or use dry. Used more in the dry form for sprinkling on cakes. Can be crushed into a smaller grain size.

PEARL DUSTS
Pearl finish with a hint of color. These are water soluble and can be mixed with water, alcohol, or oil based flavorings or used dry. Can be used in addition to other finishes.

PETAL DUSTS
Various colors to give the most realistic finish to your flowers, these have a matte finish. Can be used in combination with other finishes. For instance, brushed or painted on and then lustre or pearl dusts applied. Petal dusts are water soluble and can be mixed with water; alcohol or oil based flavorings or used dry.

Thank you for the information. I appreciate it! However, I still don't know where this "shimmer dust" fits in.

Anyone know?

Heres the rest...With Shimmer dust.
SHIMMER DUST: Give your fondant decorating that added dash of color! Sprinkle on shimmer dust (a very fine edible glitter); the sparkling colour will give your decorations a jolt of excitement your guests will love. Just brush your fondant-covered cake top or fondant cut-outs with water and sprinkle lightly over the dampened area.

Your welcome. Also..just from experience. If you are looking for a silver or gold shine then use luster dust. I use my shimmer dust to give a sparkle like glitter. I thought they were the same but they aren't at least for me. Hope that helps.

I too was confused about the "shimmer dusts" at Michael's. I ended up going to a cake & candy supply store for the silver metallic dust I needed to "chrome" my Transformer grille (See my post from earlier today for the pic). I painted it on mixing it with lemon extract. Make sure your fondant is SUPER smooth though. Any little bumps REALLY show up. HTH!
