Made a cake last night for our priest who got promoted to a Monsignor. In Mass a few weeks ago, he had his new uniform folded up on a table in front of the altar. Dh said to me - that would make a great cake! LOL - now he's seeing cakes in everything!!

Since it was just for one person, I covered a board iin fondant for the robe and the biretta (hat) was from a 6" cake. Had to tint fondant to get the purple color for the accessories. Finished it around 11:30 last nite, took a picture this morning before work and left it on the table. And when I came home tonight, the purple had faded to grey! Never thought the fondant would fade!! Luckily I had leftover fondant and remade the purple pieces at the last minute. WHat a nightmare! Will all colors fade? Or just purple? The black was fine. Strange... Monsignor loved the cake!

I've heard the purple has faded before. Is it Wilton or Americolor? I can't say that's actually ahppened to me, but I'm curious to know if anyone else knows...

OMG! I'm so glad you were able to fix it!

Sorry I can't help with the fading issue.

It wasn't really purple - it was fuschia - but Monsignor calls it Vatican Purple or something like that. I used Americolor - that's why I was so shocked when it turned grey.

I've never experienced it myself, but I've heard that purples, blues, and even some pinks, I think, will fade if exposed to sunlight for too long, or even strong lighting indoors. I could be wrong...maybe someone who knows a little more about this will share. icon_smile.gif

Thanks Jenn & Kitti! Come to think of it, I had a bag of pink icing in my car after delivering a cake one morning. When I got off work, it had faded... It must be the red in it...

icon_smile.gif I emailed Wilton that very question and I got a response from them.
They adviced not to leave it out under Flourescent light or direct lighting, but to keep it in a very low lighted dry area , like your pantry, but without lights, or anywhere in your home where there are no bright lights coming in. Sorry to hear that..It didn't sound like a total desaster. icon_smile.gif

I have the same thing happen with Wilton gel colors. Anything with any amount of red fades on me. Especially purple! I actually made different colors out of some leftovers, and all that had red faded, but blue-based colors seemed good, even darkening a bit. Not sure why tho...
