Hi there,
Need some help making my handle for my Easter basket cake. Don't really need it but it would be so cute! First should I make it from fondant or RI? I made two last night but remembered in the middle of the night that I forgot to put gumtex so I tore them apart and stored them in a plastic bag until I can redo them tonight. I did notice when I laid them out that they are laying on their sides - won't this make for a flat sided handle? Then I thought I could drape the fondant over an existing basket to dry but I'm worried that the fondant will stretch being draped and hanging like that. Should I try RI as my plan B in case the fondant doesn't work out? How would I do it? My thought is to tape waxed paper over a handle and pipe a rope of RI? What do you think? I should probably make a couple in case of breakage right? Your thoughts appreciated!

I am doing the same thing; easter basket cake with an icing handle. I didn't want to do fondant, because I wanted the ripple look of the rope icing; so I used a wire hanger, formed in the shape of a handle, I piped RI rope over the handle, let dry (overnight), turned it over, and piped handle on that side. It is really sturdy, I have already picked it up, and it looks good!

Hi...great idea about the wire hangar. So you leave the hangar in there because you have piped both sides. I can't imagine trying to pry the RI loose from the hangar and then piping the other side. Can you post a picture of what it looks like? Is it very narrow like the diameter of a wire hangar? Please let me know.

I left the icing on the hanger; it gives it support and shape. I left some of the hanger free of icing at the bottom so it could go into the cake; I will wrap with saran wrap or wax paper before putting in the cake. I have not completed a cake, but will attempt to add a picture of the handle! I can't attach to the board, but will put in my pics, and you can see there. I used a number 32 tip for the rope; you could use smaller to get a smaller rope handle. Hope this helps!
