I am new here, and just starting out trying to decorate cakes. I have a small baby, so taking a cake decorting class is not possible right now. I am self teaching! LOL! I've always been artisitc, so this is something new and fun I am trying. I'm actually experimenting so I can make my daughters 1st birthday cake in June.
Anyway, I made a cake the other night, and was going to try and put a fondant covering on it. The cake came out of the pan fine, but when I went to put icing on it, it started crumbling everywhere. Should I freeze my cakes to harden them up? I thought I'd let it cool long enough. It was just crumbling everywhere, and getting all in the icing. I just quit trying to decorate it, and decided to eat it! LOL! I just want a fresh tasting cake, that doesn't fall apart.
Any useful advice on how to start this whole process?
Kelly
You might want to put a crumb coat on your cake, take apricot jam and some water to thin it down and it bring it to a slight boil in a small saucepan. After that has cooled down, brush it onto your cake. That should help seal the crumbs in.
