How Do You Make Perfectly Straight Lines For Lattice Work?

Hi all,
I'm going to attempt my first lattice work on a cake this week and have been looking at many photos online of this technique. I'm wondering what exactly you do to make those lines so straight? How do you mark the cake in both directions for all those lines?
It looks fairly simple for short lines but what if the lines cover a large area? I am hoping someone has some helpful hints for me.
Thanks!

my neighbor uses dental floss to make her marks then covers those marks with frosting.... my aunt and I use the wilton mat for straight lines.
its the mat that you use when you are doing a round cake and they have something like it that is square....
here are the links

you can use a pc of spaghetti to "eyeball it". Unless you are waaaay off, people won't notice a little bit.
AngelWendy,
Lattice work is that straight line string work that looks like a lattice fence.
Thanks for the advice everyone. I did try the spaghetti technique and it worked ok. I'll post my cake soon.

You could also divide your cake evenly and then connect the dots at the top and bottom diagonally with the spagetti or dental floss
