So I am working on teaching some cake decorating classes at my local Park and Rec center, but the paper work and such won't go through for a few months. I had a lady contact me and ask if I could give her private lessons so she could make a special weding type cake for her sisters B-Day in June. I have no idea what to tell her. I would love to teach her and could definitely use the etra money but I am not sure how to work this?

Any ideas? Should I have her come to my house, should I go to hers? How many sessions? What to charge? What to cover? She told me she has taken a beginning cake decorating class but wants to know more advanced stuff. However then she proceeded to ask me about where to buy icing and how to bake cakes. I would think these would be covered in a beginners class. What do you guys think? Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated as I need to get back to her and let her know if I will do this or not.

Hi!

There was a lady in my area that closed down her cake and was going to show me some things on the side. She was going to come to my house and said she charged 25.00 an hour.

I would probably go to her house and charge at least 15.00 per hour...maybe even 20.00. You need to find out what techniques she wants to learn and tell her what supplies she needs to have ready. You could ask her what questions she has about baking and then give her your advice.

I think that is a good and easy way for you to make some extra money and I think you will enjoy it. icon_smile.gif

I charge $65 for 3 hours. The first class is a based on a genoise because I feel it is the basis for many cakes, jelly roll, Busche de Noel, etc. and ladyfingers. I use that class to see how everyone does and then go on from there. That class also includes IBC and if there is time I demo something else like a chocolate mold candy box .The class is usually 2 people, 3 max. I try and make sure they understand everything before they leave and set up a certain time during the week that they can call or email me but only during those times.

I just "graduated " from lessons taught by a woman at my house. She came over for 6 weeks, two hours each for $75 total.
