I need to make a fondant mongram topper for a wedding cake. I need to make three initials with the middle initial being slightly larger than the ones on each side. I've never done this before.

Can someone please tell me the best way to go about this? Also, do I use plain fondant or do I need to add something to it? How long does it need to dry? Also, does anyone know of a template I can use to create the mongrams?

Thanks in advance!
Rhonda

Hello there!
I would think you could use regular fondant. I would find a font on the computer and just make them the size you want, I would then print it out and cut it out, then use this as a template and roll the fondant to the thickness you want lay on the template and cut out the design. I know the fondant moves a bit but I read somewhere if you use an exacto knife it works better. I would let it dry for a week at least. HTH icon_biggrin.gif

i make fondant monograms all the time. i have the bride send me the font on there invitation, and duplicate it that way. i use a ''clay extruder'' to get the size i want in diameter, and push the fondant thru and shape the letters. sometimes i make 2 of each just in case there is any breakage. i usually make mine a week ahead of time to make sure they dry. they actually dont need a week to dry.
as stated you can look up the font on line and print it out to the size you want if you need a template.

good luck.
i also use the clear card holders from florist shops. i glue them with superglue to the back of the monogram. they are clear and less noticeable. you can break them easily to the desire lengths.

Here is a link to a couple font templates. Maybe you might like one of them? They are found in the galleries. HTH some, Jen

If it is a topper I assume it will be standing upright on the cake. If that is the case, I think you have to add something, tylose or CMC, to the fondant before your make the monogram. Otherwise, I don't think it will harden enough to be placed standing up. I'm sure someone will be able to correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, it will be standing upright, that's why my initioal question was whether or not I needed to add something to it. Would gum-tex work? I don't have access to tylose or CMC.

yes, you can get the extruder from Michaels icon_smile.gif

I would use gumpaste rather than fondant so it is stronger....or you can add gum trag to our fondant to give it more strength

ive never added anything to my fondant for the monograms. they would be fragile either way with or without. mine dry completely as you know fondant does dry hard, especially with no buttercream under it.

look up clay extruder on line and you can see what they are like. also hobby lobby sells them and probably other craft stores.
