You could probably make the cakes with squares cakes, at least 2 - 3 layers high depending on how tall you want them. I would then take fondant and attach it to the top edges of the cake to make the cake look like it has a cover on the top of it. And then proceed to decorate as you please. Hope this is helpful or at least get's the ball rolling.

I was thinking the same thing as m0use. Cover the square cakes in fondant and then cut a strip to put around the top so it looks like a lid is fitted over the box.
