This may have already been asked before, and this may be a stupid question, but can you color candy melts with Wilton icing colors? I know that they make candy melts in different colors, but our wonderful local Wal-mart only carries white, dark chocolate and light chocolate. So I had to buy the white ones with the hope that I can use my icing gels to color it. It doesn't say anything on the back of the package about coloring it. I may end up having to use fondant.... Thanks for any help!!

You can if you are using a tiny amount. The wilton colors for icing are water based and candy melts are oil based so you would have to use the candy colors made for candy. If you are trying to color a dark color like black with water based gel it will sieze the chocolate and turn it all lumpy.

Even when you use just a small amount, it doesn't give it a smooth color. It gets darker spots in the chocolate. You don't notice it from a distance, but if you're up close, you might. You can look at the Mario cake in my photos. I don't know if it's visible or not, but I used Wilton gels to get the green color on Yoshi and Bowser. For the rest of the colors, I used the candy colors, which I think I've seen at our Walmart. If not, I know our Meijer grocery store has them. They work much, much better. Good luck!

Thank you for the info! I don't need black, but I do need bright colors, like red, blue, orange, etc. I will just use fondant, I've worked with it before (never worked with candy melts). Thanks again!!

You can color candy melt using Wilton's Candy colors--they're oil based. They come in garden colors and primary colors. There is no actual black, but if you were to mix a bit of all four primaries with the darkest chocolate melts, it would be a decent black. You can also use powdered colors to color the melts. My local cake store carries powders in red, green, blue, and black.
