PLEASE don't let this put you off from cake decorating! I've looked at your photos and you do such a great job! And for the record, I would much rather have a cake made by someone who took their time and got it right than someone who was more concerned with how many cakes they could turn out in an hour with no regards to putting their best into it! I'm sorry this happened to you, but you are very talented and should just take your talent elsewhere! icon_smile.gif ((((HUGS))))

Well.... You can't leave us hanging. What happened? I hope you learned stuff while you were there. Move on to the next place....... I'm thinking of going to a grocery store. It's sounds like the lady was kind of snobby (go figure) and didn't want to give you chance.

She didnt want to pay for someone inexperienced. In fact she neeeds people so it makes things even worse. She said given that she needs people she needed someone who could fly. She said I have long ways to go before I am up to her standards. I said I disagreed with her but that this was her bus and her prerogative. I also said that if she didnt have time to train someone she should have thought about it before hiring me instead of making me feel like crap. She also said that someone came to the store saw some cakes on the window and said that if these were the cakes they made they didn't want her bus. How the hell did she know they were complaining about my cakes and not hers? The thing is she mentioned my writing. Someone came into the store today and no one could write on the cake except me so I had to. I should have charged her for the writing because it was good and the client was pleased. I am so sad. It's suffocating almost.

You need to open your own place. Your cakes are gorgeous!!! It had to be jealousy or personality conflict.

I worked for one of the best florists in our area and quit after about 1 month because I couldn't take the attitudes. Just because they are great at an art, does not mean that they are great with dealing with people. You apparently have both, which gives you a leg up over them any day. Please don't give up!!!

She sounds like a b**** to me! Surely she doesn't think that she can just go out & get someone with more talent than you! I think your cakes are gorgeous. You do need to open your own bakery & run her out of business. icon_twisted.gif I'm sure with her attitude that her customers would love to have an alternative to her bakery!

edited to say : it is a bakery, right?

I agree with Steph95--open your own business. Be sure to routinely leave your business card on the windshields of the cars parked outside the bakery you just left. He-he!

Better now then having the woman browbeat you for years! (Just look at what two days did for your confidence!) Geez, some people are so mean spirited. Believe me when I say, your work is fantastic. If I were you, I would make it my personal goal to put her out of business through my own cakes! And, you have the talent that it takes. Do you have an audience or client base? Husbands work, daycare moms, children's school etc. I would do a little extra....to get the business and then kick her butt all over town! Become the baker of choice! Don't look back, she is not worth it!

Your not going to get all the techniques over night. This lady sounds rude and impulsive. Two traits that you don't want for a boss. WHatever pick up the pieces and move on. You have gotten your experience so go find another one. There are a lot of bumps in the road but it will get smoother eventually.

As everyone else said....DO NOT GIVE UP and let this woman bring you down!! Your cakes are wonderful!! I'm not sure where you are located, but you should find out about starting your own business. Or go somewhere else and see about working w/another bakery or grocery store!! Some people just don't deserve to have good people work for them!!

I'm sure that didn't make you feel good..but that's normal to feel thay way..when I got laid off last time, I felt lost, ALTHOUGH i hated that job ..that's natural.. Look for another cake decorating job that would work with you at your level. you're cake don't look like Colette Peters, BUT to me they are good enough and presentable . My suggestion is, keep doing what you love doing, and venture into the next level.. keep your head up and do what you like best, cakes and cake decorating..

I once applied for a wedding cake decorating job, the owner really was very impressed with my work, but he was concerned about my experience in making cake commercially, w/c I had no experience..I do my cakes at my own pace..and I like it that way..icon_smile.gif if it will make you feel better, take two Margaritas and get it over with..Keep smiling icon_smile.gif

Awww guys. You are all so nice. I know I have a long ways to go but I also think I am good enough already to sell some cakes here and there. Yes it might take me long hours to make but I dont mind putting the time and care into it because i LOVE it! I also just wanted experience and was very sad because this woman felt so unwilling to do so after being so willing. I am so confused and sad icon_sad.gif. I mean her main decorator is leaving. She is tired of it (she told me in confidence), is pregnant again with her third child yada yada so why not take the time to train me for when all this happens? That just made me feel like I am just a hopeless case. And I got my nice new kitchenaid! I was so excited. OH and did I mention that tomorrow is my birthday? I am not sure this is a wonderful bday present.

You know, I don't know much about the cake decorating business, because it is something I just started as a hobby. Regardless, I am sorry that you were treated this way by a business owner. I think your cakes look really good, and I hope you don't give up on it.
Even if it were your cakes that the customer was talking about, after being there only 2 days, there was no need for her to bring that up! You are right, if she wanted someone who didn't need training, she should have thought of that before she hired you. I really hope you keep going with the cake decorating, and don't let that bag bring you down!

Susecita,

You have a great deal of passion for decorating and it shows in your cakes. I am sure that in the long run it will truly pay off for you!

Hang in there baby, it is a bumpy ride....but man, what a thrill when you see the awe in your customers eyes!!

BTW--I think your cakes are wonderful. Keep that bag in your hand and don't let anyone tell you any different!

Doesn't this woman realize that one "slow" decorator is more than no fast ones? icon_sad.gif

I think it is poor business on your former boss's part. I think that it is very important to make sure you know what you are getting into before you hire someone. She should have had you demonstrate your skill and determine if your style/technique was what she wanted before putting you through all of the lashings. This shows her total inadequacy as a business owner and boss. As far as cake decorating on your part...just keep practicing and perfecting and one day...put her right out of business!!!

I am so sorry, but don't let her make you so so sad and hurt. Most people who do that to others don't feel good about themselves and feel better by hurting others. Know that you do a good job and hold up your head. Just keep decorating. You do a great job. Don't give her power over you by giving up. she's not worth it.

I went to another bakery in Madison,WI. One I consider much better than the other one and got myself some donuts and stuff. There was a big sign on the window and they are hiring experienced decorators, well I filled out another application and made clear I specified (as I had previously) that I had no experience but that I really wanted to get it. I am willing to do an internship or apprenticeship. The environment in this other bakery is immediately wonderful, nice sort of more my style. I dunno if they will want me but I decided what the heck, I might as well try. I also made sure I said I would bring in a portfolio, etc. upon request. Anyways, on another note, this bakery I went to I had not gone to offer my services because they are just so darn good. I said screw it. I also know for a fact that my birthday cake is coming from Lane's (my friends prefer it to Scott's Pastry) so I will actually get to taste how good the cakes are. I am feeling much better. You guys have certainly helped me get through this one.

But I think your cakes are gorgeous!!! Keep working at it! Don't give up and deprive all the people in your area of an awesome decorator!

Susecita, DON'T give up and it sounds like now you won't. I agree, sounds like that woman was a domineering b**** and no one deserves to be treated like that. It is not your problem her pregnancy is affecting her, she doesn't have enough help and wants to take it out on you. Consider it old news and move on, girl!

If you don't get hired by the other bakery, then keep practicing and making yourself better and better. Things happen for a reason. thumbs_up.gif

You took the words right out of my mouth!!!

Unfortunately there are people in this world who are not nice. They can be mean and instead of realizing that they have a great and skilled person working for them they see it as competition. your better off. she would have always held you back. You'll find another job with someone who will respect and admire your talents as a cake decorator
