Hello!
Looking for tips to get a shimmery/iridescent look to a white-chocolate oyster thingy I'm making. Taking a tortilla, cutting into a shell shape and then laying it over some foil balls and baking to get it to stay in a bowl shape.
Then going to melt some white chocolate and cover the tortilla with it.
But to make it look like an oyster shell I know I need the shimmery effect. I'm thinking about pearl or luster dust but is there any other (edible) way?
Thanks!
Cailean

Isn't luster dust edible? I have always thought it was. Geez I have eaten it on icing. It hasn't killed me yet, but I would like to know.

Well technically it isn't considered an edible food grade product but I am with Deijha...I have eaten it plenty of times and I haven't kicked the bucket yet!!!

Hey there!

I don't know if you ever use the Wilton Discussion forum, but there was a whole thread about luster dusts and if they're edible - etc. It's confusing - they're labled "non toxic" so they're not poisonous, but they're also not approved by the FDA. But using it in the small amounts that most of us do - I've never, ever of anyone getting sick from it. Sort of like when little kids eat a crayon - it's certainly not approved by the FDA but it's also non toxic so it won't hurt them. I know that's for sure cuz I have two little boys who have eaten more than their share of Crayolas!

I bought quite a few types of luster dusts recently to try them out for an upcoming cake and the colors were so pretty - there's even one specifically called Oyster that gives a subtle gold/shimmery look - it's really pretty, so you might want to try it out. Also, most cake stores don't carry the full line of CK luster dusts so I bought some from their website (www.countrykitchenusa.com) and you'll have a better seleciton. Shipping was a lot, so make sure you buy enough of those or other products to justify it.

Anyway, for more info, go to www.wilton.com/forums and do a search (just click All forums) and try some key words out until you find that thread.

Hope that helps!

Melissa

Yes the luster/pearl dust isn't toxic but it isn't exactly "food." I have no qualms using a little though. But don't plan to down a whole package in one sitting! I went to the local cake store and bought "blue pearl" dust and "sapphire blue" pearl dust and tried out how it would look dusted on some melted/hardened white chocolate and it looked great. The sapphire needs to be thoroughly mixed and lightly dusted on or it will have splotches. But it's amazing what the cake/pastry industry has come up with - very cool products!!

Ok it is non toxic, but not classed as edible. Now I know thanks everyone. And yep as long as you are not eating like a whole bottle at a time, I guess I'm not going to worry about it. I think I will think of it like lipstick, it is non toxic, and I'm sure it isn't classed as edible either, but we have all goten some on our teeth or licked our lips. cailean I don't think we have helped you any tho. I hope you find a solution.
