Driving With Ka Mixer 18 Hrs, Safe?

Hi,
I've been asked to make a cake 18 hrs. away for a friend's anniversary. This means I have to take all the equipment I'm going to use there including my beloved KA. Do you think it's safe to it on this 18 hr. drive? A colleague told me that she took hers in a 16 hr. trip and had to throw it away.
I don't know what to do. Please help.
I've travelled with mine and it was fine, but mine was not such a long trip. I suppose it would depend on the bumpiness of the roads. If you're concerned perhaps you could put it in a box and surround it with bubble wrap or packing peanuts or something?
Why would you have to throw it away after a ride?? I don't understand lol. I mean they are shipped in planes & trucks, mine road in the car from the store to home. I would put it in a box, and you should be fine. good luck!
I set mine on the floor of the back storage compartment of a motor home and drove from northern Idaho to S. California and back, zig zagging back and forth through CA and OR, and it was fine...why wouldn't it be?
What was wrong with her mixer when she got done with the trip?
I find this a little hard to believe, they ship these things cross country and people move with them all the time. I know that my mom moved to Germany and back to the states with a much cheaper mixer when I was a child along with other appliances.
Do you still have the box and the foam it came in? If so put it back in the box for the drive. If you don't find a box that it will fit in and wrap it in a blanket for the trip. Without a box try wrapping it in quilt batting or a thick blanket and laying it on it's side so it doesn't get banged around.
I'd just make sure it was placed securely. I have driven far distances with things more fragile than a tough KA mixer and they have been fine. I'd ask your friend what exactly happened to hers.
I also don't get it on why she had to throw it away unless she tied it to the back bumper with a piece of twine!
I think it would be fine, just make sure you take your instructions with you so that you can make the bowl adjustment once you get there if there is a need. I would place it in a box with some bubble wrap like LisaM said. and make sure all loose parts are in a different box. Just to avoid the parts moving around and being damaged. Like Dustbunny said, they are shipped to us. And if you no longer have your original box, then another box with bubble wrap should do the trick.
Good Luck.
I'm out of town right now after driving with my KA for about 7.5 hours. No problems whatsoever. I put it on its side and pretty much jammed the rest of my luggage around it. It didn't budge.
Why would you not be able to travel with it? I don't understand. These are shipped all over the world. And I have seen how a truck at a retail store is unloaded!
I can't even imagine what wouldn't be safe about it. I mean, you can drive 18 hours with a baby in the car, and that's presumably safe. And KA mixers are shipped around the world every day. So what is it about the 18 hr drive that would cause a problem?
We moved from Bloomington Il. to Stone Mt. Ga. in 1983.
My KA was packed in a box with other pot and pans
and put it in the back of a moving truck.
That is about 10 hours and it is still running strong.
Ok, was she operating the KA while she was driving - lol
I don't understand why it wouldn't be ok either....
My oldie but goodie KA totally quit working last year. I was literally in tears. A friend of mine that was familiar with machinery fixed it. Something called "brushes" which are not at all brushes.... get misaligned and it can make the machine not work at all. I thought it was a a goner... Glad I had it checked. Maybe the bumpiness made hers get misaligned. If so, she threw out a perfectly good KA.... Sacrilege!
That doesn't make sense to me. Why would a car ride do any damage to a mixer if it is packed safely? There must have been an existing problem with her mixer to begin with, and why would she throw it away rather than have it repaired?
I would finda a good sturdy box that fits the height of the mixer and surround it with wadded up newspaper so it is packed tight enough that it doesn't move around. Seal the lid of the box.
Jopalis,
I am so glad you were able to get it fixed.
I know I'll be in tears too when my old KA bits the dust.
I also don't get it on why she had to throw it away unless she tied it to the back bumper with a piece of twine!
i agree....it will be fine.....i just brought mine all the way from fl to jamaica....packed on a box surounded by jeans. its fine.
I laughed so hard. You guys are so right. Hello! Why would it be damaged if it's well packed?
Mine has been to CA and back in the back of my Expedition. I just had it upright packed betweenother luggage items. I'd be leary of laying it on it's side but keep it in it's natural working position and it ought to be okay. Heck, if mine quit working you can bet my dh would have it apart finding out why. And yes, he'd know what he was doing AND could put it back together. LOL
Then, if it was dead, he'd be seeing the back of me on my way to get another one.
I don't get it? Was her mixer still plugged in when she drove away with it?? Why on earth would it be wrecked??
That it wierd! I'm sure when they travel all over the world they get thrown in every direction.
What is your friend's driving like???
Edited to add: Personally speaking I'm from the "Driving Miss Daisy" school..
Doesn't anybody have a KA where you are going? Maybe that sounds weird, but I can't imagine people without KAs anymore. I guess ours must just be a KA family-even my single brother has his own! LOL He bought one for his last girlfriend and was upset when she took it with her when they split up. He couldn't make bread. My DAD has one, my mom has one, my sister has 2 and would use another one if we got a good deal. I guess maybe my family isn't the norm...which is not that surprising...
If you have to take yours, it will be perfectly fine. I've moved about 6 times since I had my KA-one long move and the rest short. I have just plugged it in and never had a problem with it. I think MMF will kill KAs before the move will!!
I'm traveling in an RV right now with mine, and it better NOT cause a problem for it! Seems to be working fine. But good tip about keeping it upright! Thanks.
They are not MADE at the stores where we buy them....... they are shipped there.......
Ok was your friend confused and refering to a cake? not a mixer? LOL. I could see after travelling that long one might have to throw a cake away LOL... but a mixer???
Mine has moved all over the country, many times, and is usually just thrown in the back floorboard of the car. I haven't had a box in YEARS. It's fine. The things are made like tanks. What did that person do to hers that she had to throw it away? Did she fail to explain about running into the back of that huge truck?
