Hi All!

I have to do a cake for my Grandmother's birthday in May. Unfortunately I will not be attending the party as it is about 10 hours away. My parents are going to bring the cake for me.
Here's my question....can you use fondant flowers etc on a cake that has been iced in buttercream? I was told that the fondant would suck up the buttercream or vice versa.......as the drive will take two days (my parents are going to refrigerate the cake when they stay overnight) I'm scared if I do this the cake will be an absolute mess! I am doing a 1/2 sheet cake.
If anyone has any ideas for this cake I could also use some! I was thinking a basketweave around the sides and lots of flowers on top. Doesn't need to be a specific color. Oh and does anyone have a really good light tasting icing recipe besides the usual buttercream. I don't want to use anything with eggs in the icing just to be safe because of the distance and travelling etc. My grandmother will be 83.

I know I can count on CC for these answers!

Thanks!

The whipped cream buttercream recipe from this site is great. It lasts 3 months w/o refrigeration and is very light and not overly sweet. I would definitely suggest trying it.

I would suggest the whipped cream buttercream frosting as well.

For the flowers, why don't you make your fondant flowers with florist wire attached and make the bouquet and have your parents travel with it separately...All they have to do when they get there is stick the bouquet into the top tier when they get there...you could even poke the hole for them so they know exactly where to place it.

yeah, I've thought about that too but was worried the rest of the cake would look too plain.....I'm still considering it.....Thanks for the idea! I will try the WCBF I just finished reading another post about it so I think I'll do a practice cake with it. Thanks guys!!

Gibson, I'm sorry you aren't getting a lot of bites on this. The more I think about it though, the more I think it wouldn't be a problem to do flowers on a buttercream cake; even if it is going to sit for 2 days. I mean, fondant covered cakes can sit around for 2 days and they don't turn to a mess, right? (THAT I can attest to.)

But, if you don't get any more bites on this question maybe you should pm Tami/AZ. She is very generous in sharing her knowledge and she has a good bit of experience with fondant. I have a feeling she could answer your question for sure.

I vote for an all pink but various tones of pink cake; with very soft green leaves. icon_smile.gif

gibson- sorry I am not sure how much help I am in this area but I can at least keep you bumped up until someone else comes along.

I have placed MMF flowers on BC several times without any problems. I guess I have to lean toward LisaMS way of thinking. Fondant on BC as a covering is ok.

I used fondant roses on my rolled buttercream which has crisco in it and had no problem... the cake sat for 3 days and the roses were just fine.

Thanks everyone! I guess I could always experiment before I do the actual cake........then I could let everyone know what happened. I also can't see it being a problem but when someone tells you something like that I always keep it in the back of my mind.....

There are some photos in the gallery of buttercream cakes with gumpaste flowers....so my guess is that it would be okay.
