I had class last night and yesterday afternoon I was busy getting all my supplies ready and my 2 cakes ready since we were learning how to stack cakes on top of each other.....I had a 10 X 3 and a 8 X 3 cake...there were both torted and filled and the 10" already had the fondant on top and as I picked up the 8" to carry over to where I would put the fondant on that one, I dropped the cake....it smashed into many pieces. I have NEVER dropped a cake before, I could have kicked myself.....so it's an hour until I have to leave for class and I only have one cake.....I didn't have any shallow 8 " pans so I made another cake in 2 9 " pans since they were shallow and I could bake them in 30 minutes........long story short, somehow I managed to get the cake baked, filled and frosted and covered in fondant and made it to class just a couple minutes late. I'm dissappointed because now I have a 9" stacked on a 10" and it just doesn't look right, our instructor who really didn't seem to have her act together last night had no suggestions on how I could decorate it since it's not really proportioned right for a stacked cake and we ran out of time anyway so here I am this morning, staring at this cake and wondering if I should decorate it at all...guess the frustration of having dropped the first cake and substitute with a different one, that by the way isn't level, I didn't have time to do that too........I guess I just needed to vent a moment with folks who might actually understand what I am feeling here.

GO AHEAD AND DECORATE IT. WHY BOTHER TO STEW OVER SOMETHING THAT IS DONE AND THERE IS NO TURNING BACK. WORK ON SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVE BEEN WONDERING HOW IT WILL LOOK ON A CAKE.

Kate39 is right. Just use it for practice on some technique that you have been wanting to try out or something. I know how frustrated you must be about it all. But we all have our bad cake days. The thing to remember is that it's just cake. icon_biggrin.gif

I have to agree - you have a perfectly good slate for practicing on! You're the only one who knows that it isn't what you planned on it being - so just go ahead and have fun with it!

I've seen several stacked cakes that were only slightlly different in size with just a small row of dots or tiny shells around the base and they were stunning. It's too bad your instructor didn't at least have it together enough to praise you for what you did right to take the focus off your mishap. I commend you for getting the substitute cake together as quickly as you did! Wow, I am impressed! Now think postitive and get that cake finished up and posted. We want to see!

Don't feel bad... If you look there are many beautiful wedding cakes that are that close in size! consider it wedding practice. This is a beauty from the gallery and there must be more ideas in here...

Enjoy the cake!
ppost it when you are done..I am sure it will be as nice as your others...

Column cakes are very popular - two or three cakes of exactly the same size are stacked to form columns, or "vases" and "containers" of flowers, fruits etc
Check this out:

OMG Cindy! I feel so badly for you dropping that cake just before class! Amazing that you managed to get another cake done before class at all! Definitely decorate it up! Or separate them and decorate them individually and give one away?

Hugs,
Angel

I hate to admit, but I would have showed up to class with only the one and told the instructor the imaginary cake is all the rage right now. Of coarse, after any bad happening I tend to take out attitude on whoever makes me mad first, and the attitude of your instructor would have put me over the edge.

Kudos on a great save, and if it had to happen, at least you had an hour, instead of it happening as you were walking into class.

Hi there,

The cake you made is beautiful. I can't believe you had time to back another cake. That's amazing on it's own.

Well, I did the cake and it turned out okay after all, but there is a sad ending to this story.....I think that cake wasn't really meant to be.....I put the cake in the oven that evening to keep the cat from sitting on it, she thinks she needs to sit on any box brought into the house...I thought, I'll just take it out in the morning.....yep, you guess it, I forgot it, turned the oven on and baked my cake again, in the box......I had to laugh, my husband just thought I was hysterical........It just got really funny at that point. icon_lol.gif

I guess you could think positive about this whole experience....Maybe it's the worst cake problem you'll have all year, and you already got it over with! Good Luck with your next one!
