Since I didn't get any replies on butter cream, I thought maybe gumpaste is the answer. Anyone??

On Wilton's website, go to the "Basic Techniques" link and you will find several instructions on how to do flowers - mostly with buttercream or royal icing. But you should get an idea of what you are looking for

This is a Wilton cake. I believe they have instructions online. Also, there are instructions in the Wilton Gumpaste flowers book if you have that.

Also, You can do a search here on CC under Forums for tulips. That will bring up several discussions on how to do tulips.

Here are the detailed directions from Wilton for this cake. And Yes it is Gumpaste tulips - they used the smallest Rose Cutter.

Tulip Splendor

Mini Wonder Mold pan

Tip: 352
1-1/4 in. Lily Nail
Flower Former Set
Yellow Stamens (2 pks.)
Cake Dividing Set
Confectionery Tool Set
Cake Boards
Decorator Brush Set
Fanci-Foil Wrap
Dowel Rods
Aluminum foil, craft knife, plastic wrap
Ingredients:
Moss Green, Buttercup Yellow, Burgundy, Violet Icing Colors
Buttercream Icing
Gum Paste Mix (1 pk.)
Floral Collection Flower Making Set
Meringue Powder
In advance, using gum paste and largest rose petal cutter from Flower Making Set, make 65 gum paste tulips with tip 13 star centers and stamens. Using lily petal cutter, make approximately 150 gum paste leaves. Make extra flowers and leaves to allow for breakage and let dry.

Ice 2-layer round cakes smooth and prepare for stacked construction.

Using Cake Dividing Set, divide 6 in. cake into 3rds and 10 in. cake into 6ths. At each division point, pipe tip 3 stem and attach tulip with buttercream. Continue piping stems and attaching tulips for a total of 4 in each cluster. Attach leaves in between and over stems.

Cut 1 in. off wide end of Mini Wonder Mold cake. Position small side down on top of cake. Ice smooth. Pipe tip 3 stems to cover cake. Attach flowers and leaves to top and sides of cake; pipe additional tip 352 leaves to cover empty spaces. Pipe tip 140 stars to cover cake tops and overflow sides. I think the Wilton gumpaste instructions don't mention it, but I read in another book to use egg white to "glue" your petals together (rather than just wetting the gumpaste as the Wilton rose instructions, at least, say). Works much better for me.

I use Vodka or Gin - it works the best the acohol dries very quickly.

I love those tulips, and think I have the right rose cutter (from my course 3 kit).....can these be made with fondant? How are the petals formed?

Deb (not yet worked with gumpaste)

I went to the store and picked up the wilton flower set that includes a cutter for tulips. It looks really easy. I can't wait to try it. I'll let you all know.

You can also use a heart shaped cutter. You have to cut half as many petals.

Not being able to "budget" in buying the gum paste flower kit with all the instructions for a couple of weeks, can anyone give me a quick instruction on how to use the large rose cutter for tulips?

Hi. Can you all maybe tell me how to make the tulips with a heart shaped cutter? I am not able to get the flower cutter set here in Germany. I would like to make some up this weekend. Do you think it is possible to make them from fondant as well? Thanks for any and all help.

I use gumdrops for the centers and 3 or 4 small heart shapes. Just overlap the top curves of the hearts and use the points on the bottom. I wire most of mine so this avoids build up on the wire. Furl the tops back and let the fondant dry. You can add a little gum-tex to help them dry. I use mini muffin papers to dry them in. It holds the petals up.

Ok, here is what I found. The tulip cutter from the Wilton set was too large for what I wanted. So...I used the large rose cutter, made slits along the indents, not quite to the center. Pressed the edges of the petals out thin and inverted it over the end of a wooden spoon. I formed to of the petals for the inner part and the other three overlaping those. They came out really cute. When I get them all done, I'll put a pic on line.
