I have a request for a basketball cake for a little boy. I'm thinking of using half of the ball pan, and stacking it on a single layer of a slightly larger cake, and decorating the bottom cake like the basket, with "netting" on the outside. I'm just wondering how hard it will be to pipe the netting on the sides?? I'm not so great at decorating the sides icon_cry.gif any suggestions??

netting is series of large overlapping Xs... so not all that hard.

and since only 1 layer high --

by the time you add the rim (can't forget that)

won't have a whole lot of side left to do as net.

(great idea BTW)

Great idea! I don't think that you will have any problem with it. Like Doug said, a series of overlapping X's. Be sure to post pictures! Good luck

Hey Kate,
I've made such cake except I used a square cake for the backboard. You can check it out in my photos. I made the net out of BC. I used a 12 tip & waited for it to crust a bit, then smooshed the lines a bit. HTH.

You definitely can do it! Check out my photos...the bball cake was the second cake I ever did! I did it just like your idea. Print out a copy of my cake to use as a reference while doing your netting. This is what I did and it helped tremendously. Good luck, but you don't need it. You'll do fine.

lecrn....love that cake!! Maybe I can steal that idea?? icon_lol.gif Seriously though...you are right...never thought of it as a series of Xs...that makes it seem easier. They don't need much cake so I thought this might be perfect. What color do you think the "background" of the cake should be, if the net is white?

lecrn' s cake is amazing!!!!! I made a basket ball cake for a customer, who I knew wouldn't want to pay much. So it's just flat, but check out my pictures anyway if you like. Good luck with your cake.

Of course you can "steal it". It's actually patterned after some of the other cakes in the gallery. I'm still a beginner, and it wasn't a difficult cake to make.
Good luck & have fun!

Does anyone have any suggestions for trying to get a similar texture to a real basketball?? I have some paper towels that look kind of similar, but DH pointed out that the paper towels would make indents rather than "outdents." !! But I was thinking, that's better than covering the ball with stars! What do you think?!?

I have a stiff-ish string of beads (from the fabric store) that I wrap around and around my hand then press that all over the cake. Yes it will make indents but it gives the effect... I don't know how in the world you would make the outdents (without losing your mind piping them with a #1 tip, that it)

You can make the "outdents" with a small round tip. Just poke the ball with the tip.
