I recently began decorating cakes. I am wondering, what tools to use to smooth out my icing on a cake so it doesn't look all rippled. You can see an example of my teddy bear cake in birthdaycakes, and you will see that my teddybear's t-shirt is a little wrinkled. I am currently using my finger tip and water. Help!?!?!?!?
There are lots of different techniques that everyone here uses. In the past I have just used my spatula in very hot water but I am going to try the viva trick and after that the computer paper trick. I looked at the cakes from the person who submitted that idea and her icing is perfect so I guess I will try this technique next! Good luck!
There are a ton different icings and techniques to use... If you just started you'll be doing lots of experimenting!! Some of the different tecniques include using viva paper towels, hot knife technique, using a spray bottle and computer paper. I use a bench scraper and angled spatula. You can do a search and find info on all these tecniques and icing recipes. Your going to have to find a technique you like and works well for you.
Good luck and have fun!!
You can smooth your buttercream with a spatula dipped in very hot water or wait until your buttercream crusts and press gently with a paper towel to smooth out the rough spots.
I found the link to that! It was sugarshack and her cakes are perfect! If this doesn't work, go to forum search and type in "my bc tiips"
