Hi, just a little back round on myself. I graduated from Culinary School and now run a butcher shop. But I have gotten myself wound up in some wedding cake decorating for a few friends (about 10 within the next 6 months) The wedding cake I am worried about is the groomsman cake that i need to make. He is a DJ and his soon to be wife wants me to make a turntable with cds on it for him... any ideas on where i should start this?? i appreciate any help that any one could possibly give.....
if any body has any questions on meats or beef let me know!! haha.. btw the characters next to everyones names are really cute.. Boo from Monsters INc is my lil girl... my child looks a bit like her.... ALso i need ideas for my own wedding which is in August... I want to make my soon to be husband a cake with Boo on it... ideas??
thanks again..
Chrystal

Welcome Chrystal!
For the disc jockey cake, you could do something like this...

Or an easier idea would be to do a buttercream transfer maybe something like this...

As for Boo, Flayv is our resident expert on that!
well i guess cause im on a roll i'll go on with the other questions in my mind.. What dio you think would be better for me (not even close to GOOD at cake decorating..) a buttercream or fondant to be my base? The lady im doing the wedding cake for wants it simple but elegant.. i thought maybefondant and then a fondant ribbon around the cake and a bow in the front to go all the way down the 3 layers?? Any tips on decorating with tips and a piping bag? Easiest design? Ive been practicing on everything i can get my hands on... I made a cake fora lady the other day for her husbands birthday. he loves Tbone Steaks. I made him a red velvet cake and just decorated it to look like a tbone steak.. he loved it!! So i am a little creative lol... thanks again guys
chrystal
If I were to do a simple wedding cake, I'd cover in fondant and use a real ribbon (a nice thick one) around the bases...no bow or anything else. I think it's an elegant look.
so just do a big ribbon around each layer. then before they cut it let them take the bow off? Do i need those stands that hold the layers up or can i just set the cake on top of each other? I am transporting this also.. whats the best way>
tbanks again
chrystal
Yes...they'd just remove the ribbon before serving. If you did stacked construction, you wouldn't need any stands. You would need to know how to do stacked construction...

There have been a lot of great posts about transporting so I'll let you read about that from the experts

I wanted to find a pic of the wedding cake I saw in my head but all I could do was come close. So here a few pics...

well first off welcome!!!!! glad you found your way here.... I am sure we all will benefit from you being here.....
as for the avatars.... Lisa and m0use has done most of them, I have done a few, but my BOO was made by Lisa...... I love her too.... I was told when I have my hair in ponytails like hers I resemble her...just an older version.....but mainly because I love the movie, and I call my youngest boy boo...why I dunno I just do!!!!!
Now back to your question..... I agree 150% with Lisa about the fondant and ribbon.... it is the safest way to go....but keep in mind regular fondant that you will find in stores and such isnt (in my opinion, and a bunch of others) doesnt taste no where near how it looks, so if you go that way..... you should try MMF (marshmallow fondant) I think you would be pleased with it....
congrats on graduating from culinary school... big thumbs up for ya!
Where is a good place online to search for chinese symbol'd cake pans. For my wedding I am making the cake (HAHA) and also the grooms cake. I think what i want is the chinese symbol for Love. Chrystal...I love your new avatar! I've never seen or heard of any cake pans that look like Chinese symbols but you could bake a large sheet cake and cut the symbol out.

I made a computer cake for my boyfriend for his birthday two years ago. I made the decoration out of sugar cubes and then used melted chocolate and made the screen of the monitor.I put that on top of a chocolate cake. Granted, it was before I started learning how to decorate a cake but it has spun some more ideas.I guess it would be better next time to make a square cake as a monitor and make a keyboard out of a sheet cake. Just thought I would throw a few ideas your way.
Let me know if you make the computer cake, I am curious to see how it will turn out.
