Well here is my first attempt at fondant, gum paste and candy clay. It was really a LOT of fun to play with, this stuff is amazing!! I by far prefer gum paste over the clay though, far more give to it to work with I found. Wondering if you can add gumtex to candy clay to make it more plyable?
I'm glad I tried the dragonflies and butterflies as there is some sort of reaction between the rock candy and both clay and paste. icon_sad.gif The wings were all wilted this morning. For this cake I just layed them on top and put the body on them. I will have to figure something out before the wedding.
I did the roses two different ways....making them individual petals which I prefer as you have more manouverability and the "Wilton" way of doing 5 at once. I found the wilton way too restricting.
Strangely enough my kids really like the taste of the gum paste, maybe I made it wrong LOL!!! They have been getting into the bag of extra flowers etc. all day!! icon_biggrin.gif
I learned a lot during this cake, lots of mistakes and lessons learned. It really was a fun cake to do though. Thanks to everyone for all your advice etc. ....couldn't have done it without all the knowledge you all provided.....((((thank you))))

(((thank you everyone))) I really did enjoy working with this stuff. From what I have read it seems it is like royal and will last forever!! It looks so pretty on the table I was kind of wishing I had used styrofoam instead of cake!! icon_biggrin.gif It makes a really pretty decoration.....oh well.
Phoov.....if you go to my website you will see photo's of my ponds. I've had ponds for about 18 yrs now and absolutely live out there in the summer. They are a tremendous relaxation. That is were DD is getting married this August. We are all pretty excited. And that is the reason I am trying to learn all this cake decorating. This is my 3rd cake and soon I really should focus on what is the best batter and filling recipe for a garden wedding. If anyone has some suggestions ....feel free to post them icon_smile.gif I'm sure there a certain cakes/fillings/decorations that would be a no no for a garden wedding.

Wilton has a really nice garden cake stand....but it's pricey. I've seen several people using plant stands for cakes and they look really nice. If it were me...I'd consider getting a "collection" of plant stands and then paint them all the same color to tie the theme together. I'm kind of eclectic.....could repaint them another color for a future occasion! Just an idea.

I've been to your pond site! I love it. I can't wait for spring to really be here so I can get out and dig in my dirt! I make cakes and invite people over for yard parties!

Taigen,

You did a lovely job. I haven't worked with gumpaste yet, but you make me want to try it out.
Your cake is beautiful!!!

Gorgeous cake looks very pretty. With the dragonfly wings if there is a reaction you could try gelatin wings might not react..just a thought.

Cashley. yes I think I will give the gelatine wings a try and hope they will be firm enough to "stand", apart from that I may try just using the gumpaste extremely thinly and see if I could somehow make them more transparent. There is also royal frosting which I haven't attempted yet, but they would be a definite white then. I really can't figure out what reacted, the two types of paste or the egg white (meringue powder). So glad I gave them a try now and found there was a problem.
We still haven't cut this cake....much to the disapointment of my family hahaha icon_biggrin.gif I just wish I had of done it in styrofoam, it really is so very pretty as an ornament on the table. All the extra flowers etc. are gone so I know that the taste of gum paste isn't an issue with this bunch!!
The couple dropped by today and got to see it, they wanted to eat it too!!! They don't want a traditional tiered cake but I am really tempted to get the colums etc. and give one a try just to see if I can do it. I'm more excited now about trying royal, we only ever used it on the traditional British Christmas cake, had no idea you can do soooo many things with it. I really want to try a gazebo with it.
Thanks again everyone icon_smile.gif
