I think I have found a place in Georgia that will rent me their kitchen. Does anyone know the next steps? Is there anyone out there that has rented a kitchen in GA?

Hey rice cakes!

What part of GA are you in? I'm wondering if there's a kitchen to rent as well - I'm in the Atlanta area.

Ricecakes,
If you scroll down a bit under the Cake Business forum then I think there's a topic called "so I'm trying to get my business started..." that may be of some use.

Way cool - I'm from Stockbridge! We should get a mini cake decorating club together or something! Are you guys in ICES? I just recently joined back up (couldn't afford the dues at first once they shot up) and I know they have Days of Sharing but I've never been to one.

Anyway, just thought I'd say hi!

This is sooo cool! I'm a young decorator (will be 18 in June) and have never met a fellow decorator in my area. I would love to have decorating club! I'm not a member of ICES but would like to be...do you remember how much it was to join?

Hey fellow "Georgian bakerette's", I'm in Marietta as well! (Hi Sherilyn). Anyone familiar with a bakery in Sandy Springs once called "Hoffers" (for about 25 yrs), the it was "Bruehwilers" and now it's something like "Little European Bakery" (or something like that!!!!)? That's where I once worked.

All the best in getting your rented kitchens!!!! I'm not in the market as of yet. (my son keeps me too busy). Maybe one day!! But I still LOVE to decorate (or as I prefer to call it "Cake Artistry"). Working on a cake for this Friday!!! Yeeee haaawwww!!

Ellyrae,
Wonderful cakes! I saw your 3" mini cakes that sold at a craft fair..may I ask where? I'm looking for a fair/cake contest to enter and can't seem to find one. Do you need to be licensed to enter?

This is sooo neat!! I think it would be an awesome idea to get a mini club started!! I'm kind of young, not quite as young as Genna, =) and I would love to have some fellow decorators close by. I lived in Stockbridge all my life until my dad was trasferred to Marietta and my husband is from Conyers, so we travel the metro area quite often.

Lol, a get-to-together sounds fun, but what on Earth would we do? Like I said, I'm new to knowing fellow decorators. icon_confused.gif

Thank you for the compliment!
The craft fair was a "Holiday Gift Fair" at my church in Marietta last Dec. so it wasn't a contest. I haven't looked for any contests to enter either so I have no idea about where to find one. There was no license requirements for the craft fair. It was fun (and tiring) and very profitable!

Dolcessunshine,
I just looked at your cakes and answered my own question! I would LOVE to hear from you and get tips on a business. You look like you know what you're doing!

Ellirae,
I'm sure it was profitable being it's great advertising. I donated a cake to a local elementary school last month and my business boomed!

ok everyone this is what I found out so far.

I live in Douglasville. but the place I tring to rent is in Fulton County.
The folks at the Douglas County Environmental Health finally called me back. This is what they said. icon_confused.gif
#1 It would be much easier if the place was in Douglas. since it's not I would need to get in touch with the Environmental Health for Fulton and I should get a catering linense from them(I'm doing catering too)
#2 To sell in Douglas I would need to have a copy of the Health Inspection and a letter for them saying that they agreed to rent me the place. They stated that I may have to have a license from every county.(I hope not) thumbsdown.gif
I placed a call to Fulton County but I am still waiting to hear back icon_rolleyes.gif

By the way I like the club idea. I also want to join ICES. Could we be like a city chapter. I know there is a GA chapter.

I am so excited I am starting the first Wilton class in April. yah icon_wink.gif
ricecakes-
I hope we don't have to get a license for every county.

I just got a copy of the health codes for Newton and Rockdale counties.
I have to try to go through them.

I could use all the help I can get. icon_wink.gif

I looked at the ICES webpage WOW they have some beautiful cakes there.
I am not sure they would let me join when they saw my cakes . hehehehe

Hey guys! I'm originally a Yankee from Syracuse, NY but I lived in Atlanta for about 9 years now. So may I just say "Hi y'all!" Ha ha! I still can't actually say "y'all" but it's fun to at least write it!

I'm so psyched to read of so many cool people in our area! We definitely have to get together - just to hang out or do something fun. Does anyone have access to a large room or something we could use for free for a couple hours? I don't know what exactly we'd do - it would just be fun to meet each other! There's so many things I'd love to learn - maybe we can all teach each other a technique or something. I don't know - I'm just throwing ideas out there.

Has anyone taken classes with Nicholas Lodge? I'm taking his gumpaste flower class next month and I am SOOOOOOOOOOOO excited! I took his fondant class a few years ago and it was one of the best things I've ever done. And they give you fresh chocolate chip cookies every afternoon - who could beat that?! Thank goodness for tax refunds - otherwise I could never afford it, but it's worth every penny. Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone else is taking that class next month.

I don't know if you guys saw the other thread but someone said it looks like that law about GA home bakers not needing a license if you make less than $2,000 actually passed! Woo-hoo! I'm not sure - I don't know the details yet or when it will take effect - but that is fabulous news! I work full time and do cakes on weekends, and most are for fun or gifts so I don't make a whole lot, but I would still like to be "legitamate."

Melissa! I sooo wanted to take the gumpaste class next month! I'd saved up the money and everything, but my husband got really sick and was out of work for 3 weeks (he works for himself), so we're waiting to see how the bills pan out this month. I don't know it might be full by now anyway. I'm going to the shop this afternoon to buy supplies, so I might ask if there's any openings.

I think it would be cool to get together too!

Hey Dolce - that is such great news! (no, no - not about your husband - that's pretty terrible actually!) My husband had a heart attack last year so I had to take time off from work and it was really hard not being paid! So I will understand but may I offer a piece of advice - mortgage your home or something! Sell your kids! Pawn anything in your home (but your Kitchan Aid, of course, as there has been several discussions on the forum about our deep attachments to our KA's)! Ha ha - I'm just kidding. But seriously - this is the last time it's being offered this year. One of my friends took it in February, and Nicholas was saying he'll be doing a lot of stuff for Food TV next year. Which means (not that he said this - just my assumption) that he'll have less time for teaching, or else his fees will get even higher than they are now - so I figured I better take advantage now. I've been waiting years to take it anyway - it's just so expensive but it's something I really, really want to do.

Anyway, I apologize to everyone for spelling "legitimate" wrong before! Obviously, that's why I'm a cake decorator and not a writer!

I called the and asked if I could get a copy of the health code requirements for a commericial kitchen.
Rockdale mailed them to me and Newton county I picked them up at the office ( I work real close to the office they charged 3 dollars)

but trying to figure them out is the problem. hehehe

Hey Melissa,

I just wanted to let you know that I just took the ultimate gum flower class in Feb. and it was great. I really learned so much, and he's a great teacher. Not sure if this was the case a few years ago, but now in addition to the cookie, they also make you lunch there, and it's really good. If you have time I would recommend this class, you learn a lot.

Hey Ami!

Do you happen to remember someone named Laurie from Virigina? That's my friend that took it. Her flowers were BREATHTAKING when I saw them! She has a whole art/sculpting background already so even though she's only been doing cake decorating for about a year - her cakes are amazing and most are fondant. You'd think she'd been doing it for 20 years! Anyway, I hope mine will turn out half as gorgeous. But I don't have that artistic flair so I don't know. If anyone can knock some creativity into me, it's Nicholas, cuz he's just amazing.

Yes, I'm really looking forward to it! I just called to make my final payment and I found out that it is full, so dolcesunshine won't be able to take it. Darn it all. But there's a waitlist.
