How do I make a cake with a Barbie doll in it?

This is my first time posting here. I am pretty new at decorating cakes. My dd's birthdays are coming up and would like to try and make a Barbie doll cake. I would like to make the cake and icing from scratch. What kind of cake do I need? What type of pan do I bake it in. I think I need every detail in making one! Any help or website would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Tiffany! icon_smile.gif What kind of Barbie cake do you want to make? If you mean the one that is a doll standing up with the cake as the dress? If that's the one you want, it's very simple. You use the Wilton Wonder Mold pan and purchase the doll top with a peg in it that you poke down into the 'dress'. If you buy the pan (I got mine at Micheals) it comes with all the instructions you should need.

Welcome Tiffany! When I make these, I use a cake baked in a pyrex bowl and set it on top of another round cake the same size. You can use whatever kind of cake you like. After the cakes have cooled, layer them and cut an X down through the center. Wrap Barbie's legs and put her hair up with plastic wrap. Insert her down into the center of the cake. Then just decorate around her. After you're done, you can take her hair down. I'm sure your dds will love whatever you do!

Maybe those who've made these doll cakes can help me too. I tried this with a full sized Barbie doll and when I poked her legs down in the cake, the entire cake cracked in half. icon_cry.gif I was so upset and had to trash the whole cake an hour before the party started.

I'm wondering if because I used a full sized doll, ( only because I wanted a pretty doll and not the generic looking ones) and she was too tall for the wonder mold cake that was the reason it cracked. Maybe doing it the way that was suggested above with adding another round cake at the bottom would help.

Any tips are greatly appreciated!

KimAZ...that big Barbie might have been too much for the wonder mold cake. I think she's too tall for it too. Real Barbie dolls are much prettier than the doll picks so if you wanted to use one with the wonder mold, you could put another cake under it...even a sheet cake. You could also cut the hole larger so the cake is sure not to crack. I've also heard of people inserting paper towel tubes into the cake to support the doll.

I go to the dollar store and get those cheap ones and tale the legs off so only the torso goes in the cake better than the ugly pick but not as good as a real barbie but cheaper. I give mom the legs so she can put them back on as it usually turns out to be the favored toy of the day no matter what presents the child received. icon_redface.gif

if you cant get the wonder mold, but have the pampered chef classic batter bowl that would work too..... but I would put the doll cake ontop of a square cake (kind of like a stage) or a 9x13.

Thank you so much for all of your ideas! I do have the Pampered Chef Batter Bowl. How long do I bake a cake in it. Would any type of cake work in it.

I am so happy that I found this website! All of you are awesome!

I ordered one of these for my daughter's bithday. I just started a cake decorating class and knew I couldn't do it they way I wanted it icon_sad.gif

The cake was larger than the Wilton mold so I am assuming a large bowl was used - it fed approx 20 people.
The doll was placed down inside the cake without being wrapper or using a paper towel tube. The top of her dress was still intact.
They used the glitter tulle from the dress around the cake when icing it and added beautiful flowers at the bottom - it was gorgeous!
