I posted in the "How Do I" section a couple of weeks ago, as I was getting ready to make my first decorated cake...ever. My son turns 3 this summer, and we're having a Blue's Clues bash. I got some great beginner tips from my post, so I wanted to share the results of my practice cake!
It's by no means perfect, but I'm pleased since it was my first time ever using an icing bag, piping, making stars, baking in a shaped pan...all of it was new to me. I know for sure I need to make the main body color lighter next time to get a sharper contrast between the outlines & fill.
Here are a couple of pics. Any constructive criticism is appreciated!

Great job!! Pat yourself on the back - that is cute!! Just think - you did so well on your first try - just imagine what you'll be able to do after you do even more!
Congratulations! Isn't it great to be able to make, and decorate cakes for our children. I remember when I first started decorating I was so excited! These character cake pans can be a lot of work. I think yours looks great. I know your son is going love it!!
You did a great job. always remember the colors tend to darken after they sit and crust.
Great job! Those character pans are a LOT of work! So many colors too. You son will be very excited.
Okay I have a criticism - Bigger Pictures!!! LOL That's it though - you did a fantastic job.
You did a wonderful job!! You must be a natural talent. I always have a hard time with color also. I always want to make it the exact color I want it and forget that it dries darker. Keep up the good work!!
Looks fantastic! Your child must be in heaven with such a wonderful cake.
I;m new to this too, and I have to say that there is nothing quite like the feeling of accomplishment that comes from making a beautiful and delicious cake. I'm like a junkie for cake projects now .
You all are so nice. Thanks for the compliments & encouragement!
I'm glad I did the practice round, because at least now I know I'm capable of making it nice enuogh to serve company.
It was more work than I expected, but worth it!

It is adorable, and only the first of many to come. You have the knack for this and will be a good decorator.
One question?? Did your hand hurt, lol! I remember after my first character pan cake which was blues clues too my hand was killing me! I think that your cake looks great!! Great Job!

Yes, it did! I had to take a break about half way through the decorating to put my son to bed, and it was a needed break. After that I took the cake to our kitchen table because my legs & arms were killing me, LOL!
It only took about 6 hours from start to finish...from making the icing to final touch.
