Hey,
Jscakes & I have been looking around the cookie forum to find questions about sticks in cookies. We haven't found any topics titled sticks in cookies so far. Soooo...

How do you do the sticks in cookies? Do you put them in before you bake them or after? When? Also does the cookie have to be thick? We're not cookie decorator's so we have no idea! I'm doing a lovely little Easter garden cake & the flowers are cookies w/ sticks in them. Never done this before. TIA for the help!!! thumbs_up.gif

I put the sticks in before baking. I use the Wilton lolipop sticks because I think their cookie sticks are too wide. You do have to roll out your dough pretty thick - about 1/4 of an inch. Just twist the stick in the dough and make sure that it goes up at least 1/2-way - but I like it to go 3/4th the way up the cookie to be on the safe side.

And don't handle the cookie by the stick until the cookie has completely cooled! Otherwise, you'll have a giant mess on your hands! icon_surprised.gif

For my cookies, I like to roll the cookie dough to 1/4 inch thick and bake. I put the sticks in right after I take the cookies out of the oven while they are still hot. I think this is easier, but a lot of people here put the sticks in before they bake... I have trouble with this, so really do whatever is easiest for you.

Make sure to post a pic when you're done!

i was confused when i first saw this "sticks in cookies" thing
i was like huh?

lol... you mean cookie pops though right

i made a care bear cake with star cookie pops coming out of the
topper for my little boy when he was 3...
was very easy...just pressed the dough into the shaped pan,
then pressed in the stick, making sure that some of the dough
wrapped over it... its actually better if its all NOT TOO thick, too, btw

im sure if youre using cut cookies on a flat sheet, that you
would do the same, just press in lightly and a little tiny bit of
dough across the back and press again... let them cool well before
handling... and youre good to go... er decorate!

I put mine in before I bake, but I used to have alot of problems with spin ning on the stick. Not anymore since I was clued in on a secret. Get some light corn syrup and dip the end of the stick about 11/2"in for a light coating. Slide it into cookie and it sort of cements it. You will not have any spinnners to cause you grief. If you looked at the photos and ran across an ugly mess titled what not to do, that was me. I put too much syrup on the stick and they stuck to the cookie sheet and I couldn't get them off.

Wow thanks everyone! I guess I will try it both ways just to see which one suits me better. When you put the sticks in before you bake, it doesn't cause the sticks to brown? That's why I wasn't sure if you could do that or not. My luck they would burn! LOL~

Oh.. so if I put the sticks in before I bake I will need to let the cookies cool off completely before taking them off the cookie sheet?

I always put mine in as soon as they come out of the oven. You don't have to roll out the cookie very thickly. I use the bamboo skewers and have never had any problems. When the cookie cools, it contracts and holds on to the cooke. If you find your cookie spinning, just put a little dot of RI where you inserted the stick.

Have fun making your cookies!

I also use bamboo skewers, but I put them in before! lol I think it is whatever works for you. You know a potato - patato thing.

My luck, I would burn myself if I did it after. Plus, I like using MMF on my cookies and I do that right out of the oven, so I would not have enough time for both before the cookie would cool down.

I use the skewers now too. I use to use the lollipop sticks but they ran out one day and I had to use the skewers. THey're cheaper and you get a ton of them. They also hold the cookie really well.

I also put the sticks in as soon as they come out of the oven.

Thanks ladies!

NEWTODECORATING,
I was planning on using mmf too... Do you just cut the mmf out & lay it on top of the cookie when it's just out of the oven? Sounds sooo much easier then making RI. icon_smile.gif

You got it TC!! While my cookies are baking I cut the same amount of MMF with the same cutter. As soon as they come out of the oven I lay the MMF on the cookie. It melts with the heat and when the cookie is cool it is ready for additional decorating. No waiting for the lower level of RI to dry!! And if I am in a real pinch I do my outlines with candymelts! You can package them right up!

If you bake with the stick in - You don't have to leave the cookie on the sheet until it's completely cooled - just make sure you move it to a cooling rack with a spatula. Don't try to pick it up using the stick until the cookie has cooled, though. Otherwise the stick will just come right out & your cookie will break.

I also use MMF on my cookies as soon as they come out of the oven and I LOVE it. Another tip - after you make your MMF cut-outs - pop them in the fridge while your cookies are baking. Then when you have to place the MMF on the warm cookie, the MMF is a little easier to handle and not so "floppy."

Good luck & post the pictures when your done!

Wow! Yes GREAT tips!! I'm sooo glad I asked!! I was going to use a smaller cookie cutter for the mmf. Thanks NEWTODECORATING. I'm soooo glad that I'm not gonna have to make any RI!!!! Yeah!! Thank ya'll for taking the time to help me! I totally appreciate it!! Now I'm off to color some MMF! I'd much rather do that then make RI, then color it!! Gosh ya'll are sooooo awesome!!

mconrey
So do not pick the cookie up by it's stick. Only with a spatula & put the mmf in the frig! Got it!! Thanks!

Thanks, thanks, thanks!! thumbs_up.gif

I am reading this stuff and learning so much. I have a question. I am making easter egg cookies for our church on Sat. and I wanted to know if when you use the MMF can you color it and piece it together to look like an easter egg. TIA for your help. thumbs_up.gif

Welcome to CC!!!

yes you can color MMF roll it out and piece it together to look like an egg. It would be time consuming if you did alot of colors, you might want to use corn syrup to attach the MMF because I think by the time you got to the last one the cookie would be to cool for the MMF to stick.

Another neat thing with MMF, I discovered... If you use a solid backed cookie cutter with designs the MMF will still show the designs through it.

All great tips on this thread! I also insert my sticks immediately after pulling the cookies from the oven. I use RBC for my cookies, but am usually baking so many cookies at one time, I don't have room to be rolling out the RBC to place it on the cookies when they come out of the oven.....so I bake all of my cookies first, insert their sticks and let them cool, the roll out my RBC an place it on the cookies and use little dots of light corn syrup that I keep in a squirt bottle to help the icing adhere! Very easy and no mess!

I must also add that I usually use bamboo skewers for sticks and only have to roll the dough 1/8" thick! BUT, I just started using coffee stirrer sticks from a coffee franchise called Boston Stoker....they are about 9" long and flat, just like popsicle sticks, but MUCH thinner and narrow! They are PERFECT! Starbucks has the same sticks, however, theirs are a different maker and are too flimsy! The manager at Boston Stoker sold me a case of 1,000 sticks when I asked!

I took my first crack at cookie pops this weekend for an easter bouquet. I used the wilton sticks (cookie and lollipop, liked them both) But I flipped the cookie over in my hand (after I cut it out) laid the stick on it and covered with another pich of dough. They ended up being really secure on the stick and I didn't have to make them thick enough to push the stick into.
