You state will have a process for "assumed business name". In Oregon, I pay $50 for two years, to the Secretary of State's office.

In Indiana, you don't have to register a business name with the state unless it's going to be incorporated. Instead, you have to register with the trustee of your county and pay some incredibly low fee. Of course, it's still a good idea to check with the state to be sure the name isn't already taken, so if you do decide to incorporate, you won't have to change your name.

Basically, it varies from state to state, like most other laws/requirements related to starting a business. Check with your local Chamber of Commerce or Economic Development Corporation; they should be able to tell you who to contact, if not actually answer the question for you.

Also, find out where the closest chapter of SCORE is for you. (Service Corps of Retired Executives) If you're opening a business, you'll have lots of questions, and these people are great resources...and free!
