How can you create your own avatar picture?

It depends on what you want it to do. You can create an image in any art program, including microsoft paint. And then if you want to animate it go to unfreeze.com and download the free software. Unfreeze is extremely easy to use.

You can use a clipart image from ms word. Most free images will be okay to use as an avatar.

You can take the 8 KB gif you liked and upload it here...

http://www.gifworks.com/cgi-bin/gifworks.pl?com=transfer_open

You'll be able to edit it and get it down below 6K. To make gifs smaller you can use smart crop, despeckle, reduce color and resize. You can also add a transparency to make the white background disappear.
