Okay, it's 11:30 PM and I'm so stuck right now it's not funny!

It's my hubby's aunt's 50th b-day on Saturday and I have been asked to do the cake. Sure, no problem! They want a hosta icon_confused.gif , some kind of leafy green plant, however I can basically do whatever I want. Sure, no problem! Inspired by many cakes here on CC we decide on a potted plant sort of idea.

The cakes are baked and carved into a flower pot shape so I thought I would work on the hosta leaves tonight. I had the 'foresight' during the summer to pick up a 22 lb bucket of fondant from a distributer, knowing I would use it sometime later on. I have bought a bucket of this before and used it and it stayed nice and soft for months! Well, I opened it up tonight and it's dry and crumbly! I was still determined so I pulled some out and tried to knead it....to no avail, it's still dry. Tried to work some Crisco into it....still no good. I'm so mad!

Okay, I have some marhsmallows, let's try making some MMF. Followed the instructions.....and now I have a mass of dry crumbly MMF. icon_mad.gif This is NOT my night!!!

So now I don't know what to do. I could ice it in buttercream however I was so hoping for that clean look from fondant icon_cry.gif

Okay, too tired now, try again tomorrow....gotta love those 11th hour cakes! NOT!!!

I don't know if the fondant is way too gone but did you try popping it in the microwave for a few seconds?

Oh NO! Good luch. You can do the towel method to smooth out your butter cream. I would be so annoyed if all that fondant went bad. Good luck. I'm sure you'll do great.

If you haven't tossed the MMF, I would say add more crisco to it and just keep kneading it. It will come together and be great.

Glycerin worked for me in the MMF. I made some last weekend and previously it would be rock hard and had to be microwaved. It is still soft, and if anything I add more icing sugar to it.

Good luck.

tripletmom: I agree with popping it in the micro for a little bit. I tried that with some fondant that was rock hard & it worked great thumbs_up.gif I'm sure no matter what you decide it will come out nice.

The microwave tip definitely works. Try a pound sized lump for about 20 seconds on high. Cover your hands in shortening and massage it into the fondant. Should be workable. If not, microwave a little longer. Good luck!!

For the MMF...dont use all the sugar...i start by adding 5 1/2 cups and then knead it and keep adding until it's the right consistency..the most i've ever put in is 6 1/2, sometimes 7...depends on the day really...and the marshmellows too (large, small) but i like my MMF a little softer than the full 8 cups of sugar, so try adding less

I don't have any tips for you, however I'll share a little story I had last night. A week ago a friend asked If I could bake a cake for her for Friday (the following week) NO PROB, well then her binl had a terrible car accident and has been in the hospital. I did not ask about the cake due to it not being important anymore. Well This past Thursday she said oh I'm so sorry but w/everything going on this week I forgot to finalize the cake order with you. She's like it's ok I'll go to Wegmans. HI YEA RIGHT, so I said I could do it. It was for 30people piece of cake huh??? Nope! My phone rang non-stop, my 12yr old decided that he needed to get ready for a trip that he sprung on me at 8:30pm Thursday. Plus I could not frost the sides of that stupid cake for nothing. Needless to say, I threw on some bc roses, border and leaves and told her sorry about you luck, Cut it in a dark room. We laughed. Everybody thought it was the most beautiful thing they ever saw. So I totally feel for you and hope that it makes you laugh a little bit knowing that you were not the only one.
Don't worry you'll get it together and make everything beautiful :0)

tripletmom, I am so sorry to hear about your fondant. A little trick that has worked for me in the past.. after heating the fondant in the microwave a bit, add some glycerin and glucose (that has been meltedl). just keep working it until it gets soft. Good luck.
