Your cake came out great. I use a small paint roller, one that you might use for stenciling. It textures well, and washes out for the next project. I just texture when the icing is still a little moist, its quick and easy.

Thanks for the tip! Sounds like a great way to do it. Much easier than piping a million little dots icon_lol.gif

"Also, to texture it, what about that paper towel method i have been hearing about? (if using regular icings). It may work."

THat's what i do at work and i really like it.

You can use the licorice idea and use a tool from the hardware store that repairs the rubber that holds in the screens. I know the tool is just a couple of dollars. Just place the licorice on the ball where you want it and it will fit over the licorice to push into the bc.

You know I did this for a football cake once and it worked perfectly for the texture. A Dobie scrubbing pad (new of course) I iced the cake and let it chill in the fridge for a short while and then pressed the Dobie into the icing here and there. The nice thing is once the cake is done you wash the Dobie and save it for another cake or use it for scrubbing pots and pans.

Lisa was a big help with my basket ball cake! What I did was piped the lines on first and then added the star tip which made the lines look recessed into the cake. For the rim I used a coupler with no tip and piped around the edge of the cake.

Oh and I frosted with IMBC so it was a noncrusting buttercream.

That's a great looking cake. What size was the bottom round? 8" or 10", and did you put a dowel in the middle?

It's a 10" and I did put a dowel through it.

I did this cake as a groom' cake. After I smoothed my cake with crusting buttercream, I made my indention with a wooden spoon handle. Then I just painted the black part with black icing color.
