*deep Breath* - I Can Do This, Right?

I got my first "real" request for a cake and I am in a panic. I am not charging, only requesting they purchase the supplies. It's for a little boy's fifth birthday (coworkers nephew) and I am sooo nervous about messing it up that I'm half tempted to order a sheet cake from the store as a backup. Anyway, stupid me came up with this really cool drawing that I can only "hope" I can do! His theme is power rangers. It will be two tier in Power ranger blue and pink (hehe, I love how little boys are drawn to pink, mine little guy is too), with a "head" on top of the blue power ranger. Oh I can draw it just fine, but am very nervous about doing it in cake. I was thinking of using the ball pan and adding a layer in between to make the head more oval. Of course, that will mean three layers for the head and I'm worried about the structural integrity of the dang thing. Should I stick a dowl through the neck and the head to help? Anybody have any better ideas for this (not sure I want to use rice crispy treats)? It will be covered in fondant of course, which is another panic point for me. I've only done square and round cakes in fondant and not very successfully either! yikes yikes yikes! I'm not so worried about the bottom portion, it will be square and I suck worse at covering square cakes in fondant, but the cake that got me this request was a square very clumsily covered in fondant poker cake. I thought it was horrid! Any ideas for the head would be much appreciated
Some people have used a wig holder thingy that they have purchased from a wig shop or a theatre supplies place.
If you want it edible and made out of cake, I definetely recommend putting a dowel in for support.
You could make the head out of rice krispy treat though. When you make the rice krispies, measure out the amount called for in the recipe, but run it through a food processor so that you won't have it as bumpy as it would normally be.
YOU CAN DO THIS!!
I agree with mouse, if you dont need it to be ediable. then use a styofoam head, many shops carry them including wig shops, beauty supply stores and costume/stage arts stores.
but if it needs to be ediable, maybe try using a very small piece of cake board at the base of the neck, then cut the center of the head in half and do the same and place a dowl into the center of the cake. then cover the head with fondant.
here are a few helmets that I found for a template to use if you don't have one yet, just chande the colr to blue. there are differnt types of rangers so be careful which one the child wants
hope these help and good luck, I know that you will do awesome no matter what!
Here is a power ranger cake that I just did. All done with the pin prick method.
Hey KellJ,
What is the "pin prick method"?
Thanks,
Ladymike

pin prick is where you lay out the image and poke small holes all around the outline, then take the paper off and trace the holes ('pin pricks') with frosting. then fill in. hth
Thanks for the positive feedback. I love doing the pin prick method! It's quick and easy!!
Well, here it is. I have a boy who loves Power Rangers and he approved. The Power Ranger colors and "head" were chosen by the birthday boy himself. It was a big hit with the family as well. Of course I can see what a horrible cake this is, but I guess to people who don't make cakes it's pretty cool.
You did a great job! All that worry... You know, we are too hard on ourselves. Good job!
