I want to make a cake that resembles tooled leather. Has anyone done this? Are there any molds, stencils, etc. for doing this? I want the designs to be 3D like a leather belt. Thanks. icon_smile.gif

You can get that look by using plastic wrap or wax paper. Simply roll the paper up, and scrunch it all together until it has some texture to it. Once it's textured to your likings use it to imprint your buttercream or fondant.

All the tooled leather I usually see the design in inprinted not raised. That should be a lot easier. Maybe use a brown icing that crusts and push in designs. You would probably want to go over it with some kind of darker coloring and wipe off the excess with the scrunched paper towel just like a faux paint finish. I am not sure what to use. Brown piping gel comes to mind but it would be shiny.

I am no expert though by any means so maybe someone will have a better idea for you.

at hobby lobby they sell a plastic fabric that looks like tooled leather. it has texture, you could use that to emboss into your fondant, it would be a light embossing but if you then brush with a dust i think it would show pretty well.

All the suggestions sound great. I've never used fondont on a cake of mine--actually don't like the taste, but for what I'm trying to achieve, I guess I need to "get over it" and give it a try. Thanks for the replies. Marcia Cook

Well if you use MMF, the taste is bareable. Its also easier to work with IMO.
