You could always use the tubes of black icing that is ready made you can usually easily find in the grocery store or party stores. It's not perfect but to me it's easier than mixing several dark colors to try and achieve black.

I just saw in my regular grocery store that McCormick (or the other big maker of flavor extracts) sells black food coloring in the spice section. It says it's new, so it may work in a pinch. I will try to find a pic, but it's in the same box as the vanilla or almond flavorings come in. Just in case this is not the black food coloring you were originally looking for.

I hate piping gel tubes. They always bleed into the cake. Why stress? Just use a nice dark chocolate icing (one with unsweetened chocolate in the recipe) . If your son is young enough to appreciate a spiderman cake he probably won't notice. If you do end up finding black coloring start with chocolate anyway. It takes the color better. Hope it works out! thumbs_up.gif

I know that Sam's club sells their icing. So, you may want to call your local Sam's club and see if they can sell you a small amount of black.

Go to the Wilton website, they have a color chart to help you mix the colors you need.

There are tubes of black icing that are not gel. I agree, don't use the gel icing, but if all you need is simple and a small amount, I think I'd go for the tubes of *icing* (NOT gel). Wilton sells icing in tubes. It's useful because you can attach any tip to the tube. Especially nice when you need very small amounts of 12 colors icon_smile.gif

My Michaels has the individual gel colors AND the sets of colors (4 to a box) that go with themed sets. I got a Spiderman colors set not too long ago that had the dark blue, lighter blue, red and black. They are on the opposite side of the aisle from the individual colors - with the character pans and cupcake liners and other themed stuff. I think our party store has the 4 color sets too.
Hope this helps!
